  • Compare and contrast meiosis and mitosis.
  • Explain the process and importance of photosynthesis.
  • Describe simple genetic dominance, incomplete dominance, and lethal dominance.
  • Explain the important concepts associated with Mendelian genetics.
  • Explain the Hardy-Weinberg Principle and use it to determine the genotypic and phenotypic frequency of a population while properly using the terms allele, dominant, recessive, homozygous, and heterozygous.
  • Describe the characteristic features of the following kingdoms: Animalia, Fungi, Protista, and Plantae.
  • Demonstrate the proper way to communicate scientific data by writing a scientific lab report.

All Biology 1107 laboratories will be using WebCT for Fall semester 2005. MyWebCT is located on the UWG homepage or http://webct.westga.edu

320 – 359 = B
280 – 319 = C
240 – 279 = D
Below 239 = F
Midterm                                               50 pts

Final Exam                                            50 pts

Attendance & Participation*                  50 pts**

Scientific Lab Report

   Rough Draft                                     10 pts

   Final report                                      40 pts

Pre-Lab & Post-Lab Questions               100 pts

Total Possible Points                       400 pts

** You will receive 50 attendance points if you have 0 or 1 absences. In order to receive these points the student must remain in the laboratory for the entire duration of the class. The instructor will award participation points at the end of the lab session once the student’s lab station is properly cleaned. The student will receive 0 “ZERO” attendance points if he/she misses 2 lab sessions. If the student is absent from 3 or more labs during the semester, an automatic “F” will be recorded for the student’s grade in BIOL 1107L.

  • 0 to 1 absence = 50 points
  • 2 absences = 0 points
  • 3 or more absences = Automatic F for 1107 Lab

ATTENDANCE IS MANDATORY!

Timely arrival ensures that you are able to work carefully on the exercises and that you are present for the introductory remarks of the instructor. The instructor’s remarks expand on the information in your lab manual and will help you to understand how to proceed with the laboratory for the day. If you miss this portion of the laboratory it leads to confusion for you and for the other students in the class.

If you know that you must miss a lab ahead of time, you may request that you be allowed to attend another laboratory section that week. You MUST fill out a PERMISSION REQUEST FORM (pink) to take advantage of this option. The alternate instructor will give you a quiz over the material from the previous week. You can not attend another lab section without presenting a signed permission request form to the alternate instructor. This rule will eliminate any confusion on the instructor’s part regarding attendance & participation. If the pink sheet is not signed prior to attending a lab, then the student will be considered absent from that lab period.

NOTE: you must stay and participate for the entire lab period in order to receive the attendance points. If you leave lab before checking-out with your instructor by signing the attendance form, showing them that you have completed the entire lab assignment, and completely cleaned your lab station, then you will be counted absent and receive a “0” on the quiz that was taken earlier in the period.

PAPER:

Rough Draft: A scientific experiment will be conducted on the observation of antibiotic resistance in Escherichia coli. This paper should include the proper headings and relevant information. It will be submitted to the instructor and graded with comments to ensure proper improvements can be made for the final draft.

  • The rough draft must be turned in directly to the Instructor, posted on a private email via WebCt, or in the instructor’s mailbox by 4:00pm on October 24, 2005. Any paper received after 4:01 pm will be penalized by 5 points per day.

Final Draft:

The final draft should demonstrate marked improvements on the students writing abilities.

  • The final draft must be turned in directly to the Instructor, posted on a private email via WebCt, or in the instructor’s mailbox by 4:00pm on December 2, 2005. Any paper received after 4:01 pm will be penalized by 5 points per day.

QUIZZES

There are a total of 11 ten point quizzes given throughout the semester (fill-in-the blank, matching, multiple choice, or practical). Only the highest 10 quizzes will be used in calculating the final quiz grade. The lowest quiz will be dropped.

Quizzes are given at the very beginning of the laboratory period (first 15-20 minutes) over the material covered the previous week and from the current weeks reading or Pre-lab information.

**If you arrive after any quiz papers have been handed in you receive a ZERO on that quiz.

  • MAKE-UP QUIZZES ARE NOT ALLOWED!

PRE-LAB and POST-LAB QUESTIONS:

There will be a total of 5 pre-lab exercise questions & 5 post-lab exercise questions collected and graded through out the semester.

There will be no advance notification of when one of these assignments will be collected and graded for accuracy.

EXAMS

Midterm:

The midterm exam will cover the material from exercises #1 - #7. There will be both a written component and a practical component. The written exam will be any of the following or a combination of the following: short answer, fill-in-the blanks, multiple choice, &/or matching. The practical exam will be moving from station to station and observing structures under a microscope, labeled specimens, models, or any structures that have been observed in the lab, etc.

 Final:

The final exam will cover the material from Exercise #8 - #12. This exam will follow the same format as the midterm, both a written component and a practical component.

CHEATING AND PLAGIARISM POLICY

Academic honesty is essential in preserving one’s own integrity, the integrity of the institution, and in gaining a true education. The West Georgia student pledges not to lie, cheat, or steal in the pursuit of his or her studies and is encouraged to report those who do. If you have any questions about what might constitute cheating or plagiarism, contact you instructor.

If you are caught cheating you will receive an “F” for BIOL 1107 Lab.
