University of West Georgia

FINANCIAL AID FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

The University of West Georgia does not offer any type of financial assistance specifically targeted for international students. However, international student applicants are able to apply for a limited number of graduate research assistantships and graduate assistantships. Please understand that there is no guarantee that an applicant will receive an assistantship. In addition, a limited number of out-of-state tuition waivers are available to international students. For more information about these waivers, please see "Out-of-State Tuition Waivers below. A limited number of out-of-state tuition waivers are also available to domestic students who are legal residents outside of the state of Georgia

All graduate students who receive federal financial aid through the University of West Georgia must meet the following requirements:

1) Have a completed Free Application for Federal Student Aid. The FAFSA should request that the information be sent to the University of West Georgia (001601). You can file your FAFSA at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov. 

2) Be admitted to or enrolled in the University. Graduate students enrolled in 5 hours or more are eligible for all loan programs and Federal Work Study if admitted as a regular graduate student. Students admitted as provisional or post-baccalaureate accepted to the College of Education for certification must take 6 hours to be eligible to receive loans. Students admitted as post-baccalaureate (non-degree) are NOT eligible for Federal Aid.

3) Meet all Satisfactory Academic Progress standards. (Please see the Guide to Financial Aid). 

Students may be considered ineligible for financial aid if the following occur:

  • Student is default or owe a refund on any Title IV aid program from any source.
  • Student is auditing courses at UWG.
  • Student does not meet Satisfactory Academic Progress Standards (contact the Financial Aid Office for more information)
  • Student must be a U.S. citizen, U.S. Naturalized citizen, or an eligible non-citizen. Documentation of citizenship or residency may be required.

Financial Aid awards are determined annually. Students must reapply each year that they wish to receive aid. Apply to the Financial Aid Office for financial assistance unless otherwise noted. Important Dates to Remember:

  • January 1 - FAFSA forms available
  • January 1 to March 1 - General Scholarship applications available
  • March 1 - Priority date to submit General Scholarship Application
  • April 1 - Priority date to have a complete financial aid file (FAFSA results and any other requested documents)
  • June 30 - Last day to submit a FAFSA for the current academic year
  • June 30 - Deadline to return a signed award letter if you need your financial aid to cover your advance registration for Fall Semester. 

 

Please note:  If you receive a loan, you must sign a promissory note and complete an entrance counseling session by the first day of class.

 

LONG TERM LOANS - Loans must be repaid.

Federal Perkins Loan - Available to students who have exceptional financial need. Repayment begins 9 months after you graduate, leave college, or cease to be enrolled as a half time student. The interest rate is 5% and does not accrue while you are in school. This federal loan is offered through the University of West Georgia. A portion of the debt may be canceled for teaching in certain communities or neighborhoods, or for service in Head Start programs, Peace Corps, law enforcement, special education, math, science, foreign languages education, and nursing. Entrance and Exit interviews are required.

Federal William D. Ford Direct Subsidized Stafford Loan - Eligible students may borrow these funds from the Federal government. Repayment begins 6 months after you graduate, leave college, or cease to be enrolled as a half time student. Interest on the loan is paid by the Federal government and does not accrue while you are in school. The interest rate is variable. It is determined on July 1st of each year, but cannot exceed 8.25%. Entrance and Exit interviews are required. 

Federal William D. Ford Direct Unsubsidized Stafford Loan - These funds are available through the Federal government to all students regardless of need. Repayment of the principal begins 6 months after you graduate, leave college, or cease to be enrolled as a half time student. The interest rate cannot exceed 8.25% and interest must be paid while you are in school. Graduate students may be eligible to borrow up to $10,000 above the standard limits, but the total aid for the year cannot exceed the financial aid cost of your education budget. Entrance and Exit interviews are required. 

FORGIVABLE LOANS

HOPE Teacher Scholarship Program - A forgivable loan to students seeking advanced education degrees in critical shortage fields of study. The HOPE Teacher Scholarship is for students who commit to teach in a Georgia public school after earning an advanced degree. Applications are available in April of each year. Awards are made on a first come, first serve basis. Awarded only to residents of the state of Georgia. Service Cancelable State Direct Student Loan - A limited number of service cancelable loans are available to Georgia residents preparing for professions in Gerontology and Nursing. The maximum loan amount is dependent on state allocations up to $4,500 per year for undergraduate and graduate students. SHORT TERM LOANS - Emergency Short Term Loans - Short Term Loans are available to assist undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled in courses at UWG. The maximum amount that students may borrow is $450 per semester to assist with tuition payment; and $150 per semester for book/personal use. Repayment is made in installments on dates determined by the Short Term Loan Office. For more information on how to apply for this loan, please contact the Short Term Loan Office, which is located in Aycock Hall, at 678-839-4737.

GRADUATE SCHOOL ASSISTANTSHIPS and SCHOLARSHIPS

Applications are available in the Graduate School Office. You may contact the Dean's office at 678-839-6419 to request more information. Return your applications to: The Graduate School, Cobb Hall, University of West Georgia, Carrollton, GA 30118-4160. You can print applications for an assistantship by going online to the Graduate School's web page at www.westga.edu/~gradsch/. There is no deadline for applying for an assistantship.

Graduate Research Assistantships - The Graduate School offers a limited number of graduate research assistantships; which vary from $1,030 to $3,000 per semester. Students classified as Graduate Research Assistants and who are employed at least 1/3 time (13.33 hours per week) pay a reduced tuition rate of $25 (plus health, student activity, athletic and transportation fees) resulting in substantial savings for in- and out-of-state students. 

Ted and Maryon Hirsch Scholarship - This scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Theodore R. Hirsch of Carrollton. Mr. Hirsch was Chief Business Officer at the University for several years. The annual award is given to a graduating senior who continues studies at West Georgia as a graduate student. The recipient is selected on the basis of superior scholarship by a committee under the direction of the Committee on Graduate Studies. SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS

To apply for the following scholarships, please fill out the University of West Georgia General Scholarship Application. This application will be available in the Financial Aid Office. The deadline to return the general scholarship application will be March 1st of each year. 

Phi Kappa Phi Scholarship - The University of West Georgia Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi established a scholarship to be awarded to an undergraduate or graduate student. The primary consideration will be academic achievement with preference given to a member of Phi Kappa Phi.

Collus O. Johnson Scholarship - This scholarship is awarded to a graduate student interested in adult education, pursuing a cooperative doctorate degree. Need is a secondary consideration. 

MILITARY BENEFITS

Veterans Administration Benefits - The Registrar's Office at West Georgia completes enrollment certification procedures for students enrolling under any of the Veterans Administration educational assistance programs. As early as possible, and preferably at least one month before entering West Georgia, any student planning to enroll under one of these programs should visit the Registrar's Office on West Georgia's main campus to initiate enrollment certification procedures. Students who request enrollment certification should anticipate a 4-6 weeks delay in the receipt of the first benefit check. SCHOLARSHIPS IN THE COLLEGE OF ARTS & SCIENCES

The History Department offers a special graduate assistantship each semester in the Georgia Political Heritage Program. This video/audio tape collection begun in 1985 to capture the valuable but disappearing memories of Georgia's political leaders as they retell their role in the state's political history. Lee W. Walsh Political Science Award - Awarded to undergraduate or graduate student with involvement in the political process. Contact the Department of Political Science and Planning at 678-839-6504 for more information. Award amount not listed. 

Elizabeth Gellerstedt Wright Scholarship - The Elizabeth Gellerstedt Wright Scholars in Music are graduate and undergraduate students selected by audition to receive scholarship monies derived from an endowment established by Mr. and Mrs. J. Carter Wright in the memory of Elizabeth Gellerstedt Wright. Contact the Department of Music at 678-839-6516 for more information. 

Grace Talley Richards Scholarship Fund - The Grace Talley Richards Scholarship will be awarded annually by the Art Department to art majors and minors to help defray travel costs associated with the Art History Museum Seminar courses. The Art Department Scholarship Committee and the professor teaching the Art History Seminar courses will determine the scholarship recipient. The committee will consider candidates' financial need and academic aptitude, with an emphasis upon need. Contact the Department of Art at 678-839-6521 for more information.

Pearl Nix Scholarship - Any student pursuing a masters degree in Education

Peggy S. Steelmon Award - Middle Grades Education major 

Bernice Freeman Memorial Scholarship - Secondary Education-English major 

John Pershing Memorial Scholarship - Counseling & Educational Psychology major

Edwin M. Blue Scholarship - Administration & Supervision (Ed. Leadership) major

Priscilla Bennett Family Scholarship - Awarded to students pursuing certification or masters degree in school media. Part-time or full-time students who have completed one term in the media program and show professional promise are eligible to apply. 

 

Leona Ingram Scholarship - The Leona Ingram Scholarship is awarded to a teacher who is pursuing a masters or doctoral degree in education. Financial need is a consideration in making this award. The monies are derived from an endowment fund. The recipient is selected by the Dean of the College of Education and the College of Education Scholarship Committee. You may apply for this scholarship at the Dean's Office in the College of Education.

 

 

Annie Belle Weaver Memorial Scholarship - The Annie Belle Weaver scholarship is awarded to a graduate student who is pursuing a masters degree in Media Education. The recipient is selected by the Dean of the College of Education and the College of Education Scholarship Committee. You may apply for this scholarship at the Dean's Office in the College of Education. Please call 678-839-6570 for more information. 

 

 

Dr. Thomas W. Sills Scholarship - This scholarship was established by the friends and family of Dr. Thomas Sills, the first Dean of the (then) School of Education at West Georgia College. This scholarship will be awarded to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate student majoring in Education. Rotates annually from department to department. Contact the College of Education for more information.

SCHOLARSHIPS IN THE RICHARDS COLLEGE OF BUSINESS

 

Charles W. Cox Memorial Scholarship - Awarded to superior MBA applicants. Also awarded to juniors and seniors majoring in Finance, Marketing, or Management. Award not listed. 

Garrett, Stephens, Thomas, & Co. PC Scholarship - This scholarship is awarded to a junior, senior, or graduate student majoring in Accounting. Financial need may be a consideration, and preference will be given to students from Carroll, Haralson, Polk, or Heard counties.  Departmental Scholarship Committee awards scholarships. Application deadline is Spring Semester. Contact the Department of Accounting and Finance for more information at 678-839-6469. 

The Minority Scholarship for Excellence in Accounting - Awarded to an ethnic minority rising senior or rising first year graduate student with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better; 3.5 GPA or better in Accounting courses; member of a National Association of Black Accountants student chapter or affiliated with a National Association of Black Accountants chapter. The NABA (JB Blanton Scholarship Fund) awards scholarships in June.  Deadline to apply is May 1st of each year.

Out-of-State Tuition Waivers - International and domestic student applicants accepted the Graduate School as full-time degree-seeking students may apply for a limited number of out-of-state tuition waivers. Applicants with demonstrated superior academic ability are invited to apply for a waiver of the non-resident portion of tuition. To be considered for a waiver you must meet the following minimum requirements:

Student Employment - Students employed on campus usually work 10-20 hours a week and earn minimum wage.

Federal Work Study Program - Employment opportunities are available for students who demonstrate financial need. Positions can be found in a variety of offices and departments on campus and off-campus community service locations. Please contact the Financial Aid Office (678-839-6421) and Ms. Audrey Baird in the Department of Career Services (678-839-6431) for more information.

Student Assistant - Positions on campus are available to students regardless of financial circumstances. Jobs are similar to those found in the Federal Work Study Program except for the off-campus community service positions.

UWG Department of Career Services - The Department of Career Services can provide current students and alumni with information on employment opportunities in their fields of interest.
