Academic Requirements For Receiving Financial Aid
In order to qualify for, and/or keep, financial aid at the University of West Georgia, there are certain conditions which you must meet:
I. Completion of Learning Support and/or College Preparatory Curriculum (CPC) Courses in a Timely Manner
If you have been told you must complete remedial/developmental courses, or CPC (College Preparatory Curriculum) courses, you only have 30 credit hours to complete all these requirements. If you have not successfully completed these courses by the time you have completed 30 hours, you will no longer receive financial aid. You may have your financial aid reinstated once you complete the required courses.
2. Maintaining Satisfactory Cumulative Grade Point Average
During your first four semesters you may receive financial aid provided that you are continuing work toward your degree. At the end of your first four semesters, your academic progress will be evaluated. You must be maintaining a 2.0 cumulative Institutional GPA in order to continue to receive aid. If you do not have a 2.0 GPA, you will no longer be eligible for aid (including HOPE and loans) until you raise your GPA to the minimum.
3. Maintaining Satisfactory Grade Point Average
You must earn passing grades in at least 67% of all hours for which you enroll during each Academic Year. An academic year is considered to be the period from Summer through Spring. Your academic performance is evaluated at the end of each Spring semester. Any course that you do not SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETE is considered to be an unsatisfactory performance. Successful completion means that the course was fully completed with a passing grade. Grades of F, W, WF, I, IP and U are considered unsatisfactory and are considered not passing for purposes of this review. If you lose your financial aid due to unsatisfactory progress, you may have your financial aid eligibility re-established by successfully completing 12 hours of class work with a GPA of at least 2.0 and NO grades of F, W, WF, I, IP or U. Any course which you do not satisfactorily complete during this period will exclude all courses attempted for that term from consideration.
4. Completing Degree Requirements within Specific Time Limits You must complete your degree within a certain number of hours in order to continue to receive financial aid. The hours calculated include all transfer hours as well as all Institutional hours attempted. If you meet or exceed the maximum allowable number of hours, you will be notified that your financial aid has been cancelled for the following semester. The limits for hours attempted are:
PROGRAM LIMITS HOURS ALLOWED
Bachelor’s Degree (120 hours) 180 attempted hours
Master’s Degree (36 hours) 54 attempted hours
Specialist Degree (27 hours) 41 attempted hours
Provisional Graduate students are eligible for aid for one academic year only. Certification Students may receive aid for classes listed on their program sheet only.
HOPE Scholarship
If you are receiving the HOPE Scholarship, you will undergo additional GPA evaluations at the end of every Spring semester as well as at after attempting each of 30, 60, and 90-hours. At each checkpoint, you must have a 3.0 GPA. If you have a 3.0 GPA at each checkpoint, you will continue to receive HOPE until the next checkpoint, provided that you maintain a 2.0 GPA and 67% academic performance in the interim. You may continue to receive HOPE until you have attempted 127 hours. Fulltime enrollment is not required.
If you fail to maintain a 3.0 lf you do not have a 3.0 at the 30 or 60 hour checkpoint, you will not be able to regain eligibility until the next checkpoint. If you do not have a 3.0 at the 90-hour checkpoint, you will not he eligible to reinstate HOPE funding at all.
Appeals
If you have been notified that you no longer meet academic requirements for continuing to receive financial aid, you may appeal to have your aid reinstated. If there were circumstances that were beyond your control, such as the death of an immediate family member, serious personal illness or injury, or other significant crisis, which affected your ability to meet the academic progress requirements, you are entitled to file a written appeal describing your circumstances and providing documentary evidence such as a doctor’s excuse, medical bills, death certificate, etc.
In order to process your appeal, it must be filed with all supporting documentation, no later than 12:00 pm on the second day of drop/add for the semester which you wish reinstatement.
If either your appeal form or the supporting documentation is not received by the deadline, you will be responsible for paying your own fees before the fee deadline.
