The History Department at the University of West Georgia offers an exciting and versatile M.A. program in History to prepare students for careers in teaching, law, business, government, museum work, archive management, public history, and library and information science. There are concentrations in American, World, European, and Public History; a certificate program in Museum Studies in conjunction with the Atlanta History Center; and a post-M.A. certificate in museum studies. Working closely with our faculty, you will be trained to think critically, write clearly, and analyze effectively.
Programs
of Study
The History Department offers three types of M.A. programs, two graduate
certificates, and a wide variety of
graduate courses:
(1) an M.A. in History with Thesis option
(2) an M.A. in History with Non-thesis option
(3) an M.A. in History with a concentration in Public History This concentration in Public History prepares students for careers in museums, historical societies, archives, and other public history venues. Upon entering the graduate program at the University of West Georgia, our graduate students declare major and minor fields based on their degree program. Our areas of study include: (1) U.S. History, (2) Southern History, (3) Early Modern and Modern Europe, (4) Comparative Global History, (5) Public History, and (6) an independent concentration in an area chosen by the student and his or her graduate advisor.
The Graduate Student Handbook (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) provides answers to all of your questions about the graduate program, from applying for admission to graduation requirements. If you still have questions, however, please contact our Graduate Coordinator, Dr. Keith Pacholl.
The Graduate Program also has a thriving Graduate Community. Each semester, the History Department hosts the Graduate Colloquium, giving graduate students the opportunity to present their work in a scholarly forum. In addition, our graduate students have received numerous awards, pursued a wide variety of thesis topics, and have gone on to accomplish great things after graduation. Graduate Research Assistantships are also available, which provide a tuition waiver (for both resident and non-resident students) and a stipend.
