Public History Certificate

Students who already hold an M.A. in History or a closely-related field and have an interest in pursuing a career in public history may apply to the History Department to pursue a Public History Certificate. The student may pursue a specific area of interest-such as archives or community history-or take a more general course of study.
This 15-hour Public History Certificate requires:
- HIST 5400 Introduction to Public History (3 hours)
- three graduate-level public history classes (9 hours),
chosen from the following courses or courses in anthropology, art, or
other related areas:
HIST 5401 Theory and Practice of Oral History
HIST 5402 Introduction to Archival Theory and Practice
HIST 5403 Introduction to Museum Studies
HIST 5404 History of American Architecture
HIST 6201 Archives Arrangement and Description Practicum
HIST 6202 Theory and Methods of Material Culture Studies
HIST 6303 Studies and Research Methods in American Folklife
HIST 6301 Administration of Museums and Historic Sites
HIST 6302 Collections Management in Museums
HIST 6303 Education and Interpretation at Museums and Historic Sites
HIST 6304 Exhibits at Museum and Historic Sites
- HIST 5486 Public History Internship (3 hours) selected in consultation with the public history faculty
