Objective: The purpose of the course is to promote an understanding of global awareness. This requires an appreciation of the interconnectedness of global as local events. Toward this end, we will examine various global topics.
Learning outcomes: Students are expected to describe and explain global issues in an analytical framework that emphasizes the role of the individual in her/his local community and their relationship to the global society.
Readings:
1. Key readings available online through WebCT
2. Material World, on reserve at the library.
3. Each day begins with a discussion of current events around the global. Come prepared by reading the front page of www.worldpress.org before each Monday class.
Grading: 3 (100pt.) Essay & short answer tests covering lectures, discussions, & readings. Quizzes maybe given. One group project (100 pts). To be discussed in class.
1. Test 1 covers lectures and readings up to and including weeks 1-5 and all of Material World,
2. Test 2 covers lectures and readings from week 6 through week 10.
3. Test 3 covers lectures and readings from weeks 11-16. Exam date Monday May 1st, during class.
4. Research paper/Presentation (150 pts). More information provided in class.
Total Points:
A= 405-450 pts. C= 315-359 pts. F= below 270 pts.
B= 360-404 pts. D= 270-314 pts
Attendance and Participation: Attendance is a requirement of this course. Therefore, any absence in excess of 5 will result in the student being dropped from the class. Students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss assigned readings. Grades on the cusp will be determined by participation. In the event of an absence, you are responsible for class material. If you are absent for a test, you must contact one of the professors BEFORE the test to arrange for the make-up exam, otherwise, no make-up will be given. The make-up exam will be different from the original.
NO BEEPERS OR CELL PHONES IN CLASS -students whose phones, beepers or pagers interrupt class will be asked to leave. Additionally, consulting an electronic device during an exam or quiz will result in an “F” on that quiz or exam.
