served in the Cadet Nurse Corps; retired health nurse for West Georgia College

"I finished high school here in Bowdon in 1944. There were no jobs in Bowdon at that time, so three of my high school classmates applied for nursing school at Georgia Baptist. And we were made aware that the government was paying for tuition if you would join the Cadet Nurse Corps during the war...The only obligation we had for the government paying out tuition, and buying our books, and giving us a little allowance was that we had to be in active nursing for the duration of the war. And we had neat uniforms. They had gray wool with red trim..."
"I was listening to the radio when I heard the Japanese had bombed Pearl Harbor and it just gave me a sick, sinking feeling of course I didn't know exactly where Pearl Harbor was and I wasn't aware but I soon found out because you know I was so interested in what happened. And ah, my brothers were already in the war-- I mean in the Army and Air Force when this happened."
