Art & Writing Contest


The Georgia Commission on the Holocaust, in cooperation with the Georgia Department of Education, conducts an annual state-wide art and writing contest for middle and high school students. The contest encourages students to learn the lessons of the Holocaust and the nature and repercussions of unchecked hate and prejudice taken to their ultimate extremes.

Writing Contest
Students may choose to write a poem, newspaper article, story, play/dialogue, research paper, or essay to answer the question, "What are the lessons of the Holocaust?"

Each entry must be accompanied by a title page, which contains the following information:
  • Student's name
  • Home address and telephone number
  • School address and telephone number
  • Teacher's name and email address
  • Grade Level

Rules:

  • Only three entries may be submitted per school, per division (Middle School and High School).
  • The entry must represent the independent effort of the student.
  • The entry must show evidence of thoughtful research of the topic. A minimum of three sources must be cited on a separate page, only one of which can be obtained through the internet.
  • The entry may not exceed 1,000 words (Division I) or 2,000 (Division II and must be typed double-spaced on one side of the paper.
  • The entry will be judged on content, originality, quality of expression, and historical accuracy by a panel of judges.
  • The entry becomes the property of the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust, which reserves the right to publish it in its entirety with credit to the author.

Art Contest
Students may choose to create a sculpture, drawing, painting, poster, video, or collage to answer the question, "What are the lessons of the Holocaust?"

Each entry must be accompanied by a title page, which contains the following information secured to the back of the artwork.

  • Student's name
  • Home address and telephone number
  • School address and telephone number
  • Teacher's name and email address
  • Grade Level

Rules

  • Only three entries may be submitted per school, per division (Middle School and High School).
  • The entry must represent the independent effort of the student.
  • The entry must show evidence of thoughtful research of the topic. A minimum of three sources must be cited on a separate page, only one of which can be obtained through the internet.
  • The entry shall not exceed the dimensions 24" x 24".
  • The entry will be judged on creativity, artistic excellence, and thematic content by a panel of judges.
  • The entry becomes the property of the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust, which reserves the right to publish it in its entirety with credit to the author.

Eligibility
Middle and High School Students
Division I, Grades 6-8
Division II, Grades 9-12

Only three entries may be submitted from each school, per division, per contest.



Deadline
Entries must be postmarked no later than March 10, 2006.
Winners in each division will be announced on the third week of April, 2006

Awards
First, Second, Third and Fourth Place students and their teachers will be presented and recognized at the Georgia State Capitol as part of the State of Georgia Days of Remembrance Observance on April 28, 2006.

First Place
(4 Winners and Teachers)

  • Trip to Washington, D.C. to visit the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum for the students and sponsoring teachers. (one student from each category in each division with their sponsoring teacher)

  • $100.00 monetary award

Second Place
