Outdoor Programs
The Intramurals and Recreational Services (IRS) Department provides for various outdoor opportunities for its members during the entire year. This includes many outdoor activities.
1.) IRS provides
at least two outdoor high adventure trips each semester to some
area in Georgia or neighboring states to participate in back-packing,
camping, canoeing, fishing, hiking, international travel to Japan, kayaking,
orienteering, rafting, rock-climbing, sailing, shooting, skin-diving,
and spelunking. These trips will usually cost between $5.00 and $50.00
depending on the cost of entry and registration at the selected spots
we attend. The cost to Kagoshima is much greater than $50.00. Please see
the section on the Kagoshima Trip for more information on this international
trip program.
2.) Intramurals provides a Day at the Lake once a semester
where University students, staff and faculty may come to Lake
Carroll or Tanner and try out the department's small crafts (canoes, kayaks
and sailboats) on the water to enjoy the boats at the lake. Instruction
is provided by the IRS staff to acquaint the user with the skills needed
to use these small craft and the appropriate safety procedures.
The Day at the Lake is a free event for all of the University community.
3.) The IRS Department provides special team building activities for different
groups using outdoor activities, such as back-packing, canoeing,
climbing wall, hiking, kayaking, orienteering, and paintball.
A small fee will be expected for these special training sessions.
4.) The IRS Department is planning to schedule some one day outings each semester not requiring any over night stays and within about 60 miles of the University in the following activities: canoeing; hiking; kayaking; orienteering, rock climbing and sailing.
5.) The IRS Department maintains a 9-hole, par-3 disc golf course on campus that begins next to the observatory fields (behind the track). We also have disc golf disc sets available for rental at the Outdoor Recreation Center.
