Google Scholar Research Project
Jean Cook, university librarian, and Veronica Cook, high school chemistry teacher, designed a new exercise using Google Scholar to engage students in research. After a short 20-30 minute introduction, students independently choose topics, conduct searches, and keep a research diary their finds, culminating in a final annotated bibliography of ten scholarly articles.
In doing so, students will
- follow a complete research process.
- analyze, criticize, select, and reject scholarly articles.
- increase vocabulary.
- reflect on their research as it evolves.
The project incorporates the following Georgia Performance Standards.
- SCSh1. Students will evaluate the importance of curiosity, honesty, openness, and skepticism in science.
- SCSh6. Students will communicate scientific investigations and information clearly.
- SCSh7. Students will analyze how scientific knowledge is developed.
- SCSh8. Students will understand important features of the process of scientific inquiry.
- SCSh9. Students will enhance reading in all curriculum areas by:
- reading in all curriculum areas.
- discussing books.
- building vocabulary knowledge.
- establishing context.
