|
|
Lecture Outline: Step 1: Set up your Sun account so it will allow you to create a homepage and to share documents. To do this you will need to be at the Sun prompt: [ sun{jdoe}22 ]
To get to the Sun Prompt
B. From Off Campus - You will have to download and install another program to upload to the West Georgia Server from off campus. You will be given information about this program and how to set it up.
At the Login prompt: type your account name: stu12345 - then type your password. At the sun prompt type "homepage_ok" ( sun{jdoe}22: homepage_ok). This will create a default homepage, set up your files, folders, etc. Step 2: Create a Simple Web Document using FrontPage. Save this document on a diskette and give it a name: index.html or home.html index.html will cause this document to be pulled up
whenever someone goes to your
judy.html (or yourname.html) will cause this document to be
pulled up only when someone types
When you do not use index.html - then by typing
only .... /~stu33454
Step 3: FTP this document to your SUN account so it can be accessed by the public. FTP (file transfer protocol) is a method of sharing files and maintaining and updating files on remote servers. The most popular FTP software is WS_FTP. You can get a copy of this at Tucows.
On Campus: - go to desktop -
click on the FTP icon:
On the Left of the Screen it shows the directories [local directory (a or c drive)] and files on the computer you are using. Now simply ftp (move) the documents from the local directory (a or c drive) to the remote directory (SUWG sun server). These documents should be placed in the public_html directory.
Step 4: As a final step, view these documents using Internet Explorer or Netscape. Assignment: Reading: Go to the ITS Surfing Guide and read the article titled "Using WS FTP and Fetch." Resources: Homepage Creation at SUWG Concepts and Terms to Know: FTP (file transfer protocol)
