Setting up a Homepage and FTP to the SUWG Server (SUN)

Lecture Outline:

Step 1:  Set up your Sun account so it will allow you to create a homepage and to share documents.   To do this you will need to be at the Sun prompt:  [ sun{jdoe}22 ]

To get to the Sun Prompt
      A.  From Campus - go to your Desktop - click on Terminal   - click File (top left)  -  then Open  -  then double click Sun  - then you see  "Login"

      B.  From Off Campus  -  You will have to download and install another program to upload to the West Georgia Server from off campus.  You will be given information about this program and how to set it up.

At the Login prompt:  type your account name:  stu12345  -  then type your password.

At the sun prompt type "homepage_ok" ( sun{jdoe}22: homepage_ok).   This will create a default homepage, set up your files, folders, etc.

Step 2:    Create a Simple Web Document using FrontPage.  Save this document on a diskette and  give it a name:     index.html  or home.html

index.html will cause this document to be pulled up whenever someone goes to your
    web address:  http://www.westga.edu/~stu33454

judy.html  (or yourname.html) will cause this document to be pulled up only when someone types
your web address and adds (judy.html):  http://www.westga.edu/~stu33454/judy.html

When you do not use index.html - then by typing only ....  /~stu33454
you will get a list of all files you have put into your public directory.
    Look at http://www.westga.edu/~lvg

Step 3:    FTP this document to your SUN account so it can be accessed by the public.  FTP (file transfer protocol) is a method of sharing files and maintaining and updating files on remote servers.   The most popular FTP software is WS_FTP.  You can get a copy of this at Tucows.

On Campus:  - go to desktop -  click on the FTP icon:
       Profile Name:  "your first name"
       Host Name/Address:   "sun.cc.westga.edu"
       Host Type:   "automatic detect",
       User ID:   "stu12345"
       Password:   "your sun password"
       Now click "OK"

You can not FTP files from off-campus using WS_FTP!

On the Right of the Screen shows the directories & files (remote directories) in your sun account.   Be sure to go to (click) the "public_html " directory on the left of the  'ftp screen'

On the Left of the Screen it shows the directories [local directory (a or c drive)]  and files on the computer you are using.  Now simply ftp (move) the documents from the local directory (a or c drive) to the remote directory  (SUWG sun server).  These documents should be placed  in the public_html directory.

Step 4:   As a final step, view these documents using Internet Explorer or Netscape.
