Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming, 1993

Took a 3-week trip to Wyoming with my good friend Ken.  We spent some time in Rocky Mountain National Park and the Tetons.  Some pictures from the Tetons are included below.  We climbed Irene's Arete, Black Dike Pinnacle of Middle Teton, and the Grand Teton via the Exum Direct route.  There was a lot of snow this year and many routes were still snowed in.

The Tetons from Jackson Hole

Lots of snow this year.

Middle Teton from Garnet Canyon Trail

We climbed the "Black Dike" route, visible as thin, black stripe on lower center portion of peak. Snow above leads to summit of Black Dike Pinnacle.

Ascending snow above rock climbing pitches.

Lower Saddle camp

We were the idiots who slept under a tarp at the Lower Saddle. It flapped so bad in the wind we had to cut earplugs from our foam pads in order to sleep.

Grand Teton from Lower Saddle

We climbed the "Exum Direct" route, which starts above the snow in the lower center of the photo and ascends the prominent ridge, joining the "normal" Exum Ridge above.

The "Black Face" of lower Exum Ridge

On upper Exum Ridge

It was a very cold snowy summer and there was still much snow and ice on the route.

Higher on Exum Ridge

This route is popular because it is only moderately difficult but the exposure is breathtaking.

Nearing the summit

Again--lots of snow.
