Introduction

No other symbol of the United States is as revered as the United States flag and few are as old. Like many of our institutions, the founders of our country borrowed from England to build the foundations of the new government - that was true of the flag as well.Our flag has its origins in the Union Jack, our first flag contained the Union Jack in its canton.
 
 
 
 

Have you ever wondered what the stars and stripes on the United States Flag mean? Have you ever wondered why there are so many different American Flags? Do you know how to show respect to the American Flag? In this unit you are going to find answers to these questions and learn even more about the American Flag.

During this activity, you may use the following websites for information and pictures.



Tasks:

1) Keep a journal of important information that you find as you are visting the websites. You will need to make a log in your journal everyday. You may write information, your feelings, or even draw a picture.
2) Complete a worksheet, Flag Match and the Parts of the Falg, that will be handed out. Both of these are very short worksheets.
3) In groups of 2 to 4, a short presentation will be given. This can be a demonstration, informational, or even a short video enactment. The presentation must be 5 minutes per person in the group.(ex: 2 people - 10 minutes / 3 people - 15 minutes) The topics are Flag Etiquette, Betty Ross, History of the US Flag, The Star Spangled Banner, Frequently asked questions and the answers, or why we have so many flags.
4) You will chose an activity from the Patriotic Crafts site. You may choose one of the following: pinwheel, windsock, us flag from craft sticks, or the patriotic pots. Some time will be givin in class to work on your project. Art materials will be available if needed.
