Judo Techniques


         The following fifteen techniques will be covered this semester. There are seven grappling techniques and eight throwing techniques. You are strongly encouraged to learn the translations for the Japanese names for each of these. The translations can be considered a short description of the technique in most cases.
 

Holding Techniques (Osae waza)

    • Kuzuri kesa gatame  -  Modified scarf hold
    • Kuzuri kami shiho gatame  -  Modified upper four corner hold
    • Yoko shiho gatame  -  Side four corner hold
    • Kata gatame  -  Shoulder hold


Choking Techniques (Shime waza)

    • Kataha jime  -  Single wing strangle
    • Kata juji jime  -  Half cross strangle


Armlocking Techinques (Kansetsu waza)

    • Ude garami  -  Entangled armlock


Throwing Techniques (Nage waza)

    • O soto gari  -  Major outer cut
    • Tai otoshi  -  Body drop
    • Ko uchi gari  -  Minor inner cut
    • Koshi guruma  -  Hip wheel
    • Okuri ashi harai  -  Following foot sweep
    • Uki goshi  -  Floating hip
    • Hiza Guruma  -  Knee wheel
    • Harai goshi  -  Sweeping hip
