Charles E. Beard Ingram Library Endowment Fund
To honor Charles Beard upon his retirement from Ingram Library and the State University of West Georgia, the Charles E. Beard Ingram Library Endowment Fund was established. The Fund, which will benefit Ingram Library in perpetuity, is a fitting tribute to Charles and a lasting testimony of his love for and dedication to Ingram Library, the State University of West Georgia, and the library profession.
Charles began his career at West Georgia as Professor and Director of Libraries on August 21, 1978. During his tenure, Charles was actively involved on campus, in the Library, and in the library profession. On campus, he worked to enhance the value of the Library, encourage library use, and improve services to library users. He also served on numerous campus committees, most recently chairing the Five-Year Master Facilities Planning Committee. Professionally, Charles was active locally, regionally, and nationally. He served in various capacities and held numerous offices in the Georgia Library Association, the Southeastern Library Association, the American Library Association, and other professional organizations. He chaired the Georgia State Board of Certification of Librarians and served on the Advisory Board of the Georgia Center for the Book. He also worked on the GALILEO (Georgia Library Learning Online) project since its inception. A staunch advocate for libraries, Charles consistently promoted libraries as an integral part of the learning process through his work, presentations around the United States, participation in Georgia Legislative Day activities, and service as a delegate to the White House Conferences on Libraries and Information Science. Recently, the Georgia Library Association named its Library Advocacy Award the Charles Beard Library Advocacy Award.
