The Mission of Library Access Services is to support the research and instructional needs of the students, faculty and staff of the State University of West Georgia, by providing easy and effective access to the specific information resources required, regardless of format or location.

We endorse and consistently strive to adhere to the precepts set forth in the American Library Association's Code of Ethics and Library Bill of Rights, as well as the Association of College & Research Libraries' Intellectual Freedom Principles for Academic Libraries. In addition, we are bound by the privacy protection of library records mandated by the Georgia Legislature in Section 24-9-46 of the Official Code of Georgia Annotated.

In response to the acts of terrorism perpetrated on September 11, 2001, Congress recently enacted what is popularly called the USA Patriot Act. Provisions of this new law expand the FBI's access to records, including records kept by libraries. For more information on this law, its impact on confidentiality of library patron records, and the recourse which libraries have when presented with a search warrant, we encourage you to go to the ALA's Office for Intellectual Freedom site.

Visionary Goals, #4: Technology Across the Curriculum (http://www.westga.edu/~spc/phase3/3x5.html)

  • To support the continued engagement of alumni and the local community in University activities by providing free library check-out privileges and negotiating cooperative agreements with other libraries in the region.
Bread & Butter Goals, #4: Public Relations; #7: External Relations; #8: Regional Collaboration (http://www.westga.edu/~spc/phase3/BB.html).

    Assessment:

  • Periodically, the Library as a whole surveys students to determine their satisfaction with library services, materials and their access to them.

  • An on-line evaluation form for users is provided on the Library's Distance Learning Services webpage; in addition, statistics are analyzed each year to assess the timeliness of response to document delivery requests.

  • The ILL Department uses monthly reports from OCLC to enable them to assess their results in filling requests; periodic user surveys are sometimes conducted, particularly when introducing new modes of service.

  • The Stacks Management section utilizes statistical sampling to identify sections of the stacks which are most in need of maintenance, and conducts ongoing studies of the success/failure of book searches.

  • Circulation regularly pulls Call Slip Processing statistical reports in order to assess results in filling GIL Express requests; they also report and monitor monthly circulation statistics, which provide an index of the degree to which we are serving our clientele.
