TO SEARCH GIL (Galileo Interconnected
Libraries)
Keyword Search (relevance ranked)
When you type in a word or words in the keyword
search box, GIL retrieves records with one or more of the specified terms.
For further information about Keyword searching, go to the HELP Screen.
1) Choose Relevance Ranked Keyword from
GIL's introductory screen.
GIL gives you a screen with
a box for typing in search terms and a list of detailed instructions on
exactly
how to type your search, such
as when to use " " marks, and when to use such marks as ?,*, +, !
2) Read the Search Tips before typing
in your search
EXAMPLE:
"Rain forest" means you want all items with the phrase rain
forest as an essential term in the search results.
3) Click on the search button. GIL will
display a list of items which are in relevance ranked order.
For information about the
rules for the rank ordering, go to the HELP screen.
The degree of relevancy is
marked by diamonds .

4) To find out if the book is on the shelf
and where it is located, click on the blue title. This will bring up the
item's record.
5) To find other books on this topic, click
on the listed subject headings in the item record.
To find more items by this
author, click on his/her name.

Precision Search
When you want to construct a Boolean search query
without any knowledge of Boolean logic or syntax.
* Read
the Search Tips before typing in your search.
*
Use the drop down menus on the Precision Search screen to identify 1) which
field to search in and 2) the
relationship between the terms AND, OR, NOT. AND = all of these, OR = any
of these, NOT = none of these.

Command Search
When you want to enter a search query in standard
Boolean syntax.

Read the Search Tips before typing in your search.

Since there are no stop words in Voyager, you must remember
to capitalize your operators (AND, OR, NOT).
*
Quotation marks group search terms into phrases; parenthesis
allow you to perform complex nested searches.

Title/Author/Subject Search.
To find items by exact title, journal title author,
subject, or call number.
For further information about Title/Author/Subject/
searching, go to the HELP Screen
1) Choose Title/Author/Subject from GIL's introductory
screen.
2) Read the Search Tips before you type in your search.
3) GIL gives you
a screen with a space for typing in search terms, dots for choosing what
kind of search you want to do.

Now click the search button.
5) GIL presents you
with a list of subject headings, authors, or titles or call numbers.
You can
find related items by clicking on the oval with the words "See also" in
it.

6) If you click on the blue heading
you will see a list of titles and authors of items on your topic
[Or a list of titles
by your author, or a list of titles similar to the one you typed in.]
7) To find out if an item
is on the shelf and to get more information about it, click on the blue
title.
This will
bring up the item's record.
8) To find more items similar to this
one, click on the title, the subject heading, the author,
or the call number.

Search Tips
Help screens are available on every GIL search
screen.
A Set Search Limits option is available
on many GIL search screens. Click on it to see the drop down menu.
It is not available
on the Title/Author/Subject search screens or on the Course Reserves search
screens
To start another search, click on "New Search".
To Mark records, click on the Marked
checkbook on the display screen
To Print a record, click on the print
icon at the top of the Netscape screen. You will then need to click
on OK in the box that appears on the screen.
To end your session and to protect
your privacy, click on the light gray box marked Exit when you
are finished.
