General maps

"General maps" refer to non-federal depository maps, such as maps accompanying an issue of the National Geographic. These are placed in map cases located on the first floor. They are classified and filed by the Library of Congress call number.

In OCLC the holdings code is GWCB. For the online catalog the item type is "book" and location code is "maps". For descriptive cataloging, refer to AACR2 and the OCLC documentation for the MARC21 format.

• Write the call number in the lower right corner.
• Place the barcode label near the call number whenever possible.
• Apply ownership stamp on the back of the map.
• Apply 3M detection strip.
