Search Procedures Committee Meeting Minutes
08 November 2000
Attending: Michael Aldrich (Chair), Carol Goodson (Secretary), Debbie
Novak, Susan Smith.
The meeting was called to order by Chair, Michael Aldrich, at 9:21 am.
- The Committee briefly reviewed the current and proposed policies
relevant to our search procedures for paraprofessionals. Michael stressed
the need to take our time as we work through our charge, making sure that
all voices are heard. Prior to presenting any proposals to the Librarians'
meeting, we will announce and hold an open meeting so that anyone
interested has an opportunity to express their views.
- Charge #1 to the Committee was to revise our current Human Resources
Manual. Current procedures were approved nearly two years ago, and may
need to be changed as the needs of the Library have changed. Some of the
current search procedures seem to be no longer accurate, and others may be
too restrictive; for example, why couldn't the supervisor of the position
to be filled be named Chair of a Search Committee (instead of "the head of
the division/department in which the position is to be filled," as it is
now?
Also, our position criteria are different from those of the state, and may
need to be reconciled, however, we don't want to lose the flexibility to
create positions which will satisfy our unique needs, either (such as
Circulation Manager or Stacks Manager; we may even decide we need a
Serials Manager to handle the tasks now being done by Debbie Harrell).
The Board of Regents is currently engaged in revising all job criteria,
and is using Georgia State as a model. Michael will send out the URL for
GA State's information to Committee members so we can see what they are
doing.
- How to accomplish our task swiftly: we will probably need to meet
weekly as long as we can until the holidays interrupt. Therefore, our next
meeting will be Wednesday, November 15th at 9:00am.
Meeting adjourned at 10:02am.
Respectfully submitted,
Carol Goodson, Secretary
