Search Procedures Committee Meeting Minutes

Attending: Michael Aldrich (Chair), Carol Goodson (Secretary), Valerie
League, Debbie Novak, Susan Smith.
The meeting was called to order at 9:21a.m., by Chair Michael Aldrich.
The Chair reviewed the charges to the Committee. Part of Charge #2
includes promotion procedures; however, since we anticipate the need to
fill key positions, we will concentrate on hiring procedures first.
Questions to be considered:
- do we need our own separate hiring policies, since the University
already has them in place? (UWG recruitment and hiring policies are on the
web). Perhaps we could merely annotate the UWG policy to deal with our own
specific needs? Alternatively, we could create our own policy, but include
references to the UWG policy in areas for which a separate Library policy
is not needed.
- If we create a separate policy for the Library, are we starting from
scratch, or are we merely reviewing and revising the current policy?
- How (or if) to add the streamlined procedures proposed originally by
Carol G.: Susan is only comfortable with using this "lite" procedure in
limited situations, such as for part-time or temporary positions. Carol,
on the other hand, wants it added as an alternative within our current
policy. If compromise cannot be reached, perhaps we will have to present
two proposals, one with the "lite" policy included, and one without. A
first step might be to clarify the two procedures, by placing the texts
side-by-side so it can be seen clearly how they differ and how they are
alike.
