GALILEO
What is GALILEO?
GALILEO is a research tool on the Web which allows you to access a wealth of
information. Through it you can potentially access over 150 databases indexing
thousands of periodicals and scholarly journals. Over 7000 journal titles are
provided in full-text. Other resources include an encyclopedia, business directories,
a collection of over 10,000 full-text books and government publications.
GALILEO stands for GeorgiA LIbrary
LEarning Online. It is a project sponsored
by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia.
In GALILEO you can:
- Find articles. GALILEO databases include full-text articles from more than
7,000 magazines, scholarly journals, and newspapers
- Find citations to articles in printed journals and other publications found
at your library and in libraries throughout Georgia
- Find documents and images on Georgia history
- Find information in online encyclopedias, directories, etc.
- Find recommended Web sites, including links to Georgia-related Web sites
- Find full text electronic books. Through a database called netLibrary you can read entire
books online.
How do you access GALILEO?
You can access GALILEO 24/7 via the Internet from the following URL:
http://www.galileo.usg.edu
Or, you can click on the GALILEO link from the Library home page.
In order to access GALILEO off campus you will need the current password (the
password changes at the beginning of each semester). For information on obtaining
the current GALILEO password, consult
Your Library
Account and Passwords.
When or Why would you use GALILEO?
You would use GALILEO when you need to find information on a specific topic.
For example, suppose you were assigned to write a 10 minute speech on the following
topic:
Should smokers who have developed lung
cancer
be permitted to sue the tobacco companies for damages?
...you could use the databases in GALILEO to find full text articles in
newspapers,
magazines, or scholarly journals to help you write your speech. You could also
use the databases in GALILEO to locate full text online books, encyclopedia articles
and statistics, as well as, books not owned by the UWG library.
Learning how to use GALILEO
If you’re using GALILEO for the first time, you may want to work your
way through the GALILEO tutorial at the Online
Library Learning Center.
