INSTRUCTIONAL SERVICES
Need help researching a topic or using a research tool? The Instructional
Services Division of the Library offers a full range of instructional support
on a wide variety of topics related to library research.
Basic Library Instruction
Students enrolled in 1/2000 level courses, inexperienced researchers, and those
students needing refresher classes in basic research are strongly encouraged
to sign-up for the basic library instruction sessions. Each class, approximately
30 minutes in length, covers one topic. A brief description of each class is
listed below:
- The Research Process introduces students to the basic research
information gathering steps. Topics include background information, type
information needed, access tools for various types of information, and the
importance of documenting sources.
- GALILEO (Georgia Learning Online) focuses on the web based
virtual library
of the University System of Georgia that provides access to over 100 databases
covering a broad spectrum of subjects and materials. The session includes an
overview of GALILEO, accessing GALILEO, basic search strategies, interpreting
search results, availability of materials, an explanation of general and subject
specific databases in GALILEO, and printing, downloading, and emailing search
results.
- GIL (GALILEO Interconnected Libraries) introduces students to
the online catalog of Ingram Library and the system used throughout the state of
Georgia. The class will include an overview of GIL, accessing GIL, basic search
strategies, interpreting search results, and printing, downloading, and emailing
search results.
- Searching for Information on General Topics highlights
selected paper and electronic sources that are useful in locating information on
current interest and general information topics. Example of indexes/databases
covered are CQ Researcher and LexisNexis.
- Searching for Information on Literary Topics focuses on
identifying, accessing, searching, and interpreting search results in selected
databases that contain literary information. Examples of databases covered are the
Library Catalog and MLA Bibliography .
Registration
To register for a Basic Library Instruction session, go to the Library
Instruction Sessions Web page and select the month(s) in which you would
like to attend, then complete and submit the registration form online. You will
receive an email confirming the session(s), date(s), and time(s).
Online Tutorials
For those students unable to attend the in-class sessions, the Library also
has available two online tutorials that may be of interest to the inexperienced

is designed to help you through the research process and demonstrate how to
utilize access tools to locate information on your topic.
Online Library Learning Center
The Online Library Learning Center
provides tutorials on the research process, the physical library, Databases,
GALILEO, using GIL, the Internet, and citing and evaluating sources.
LIBR1101: Academic Research and the Library
LIBR1101:
Academic Research and the Library is taught each semester by the instruction
librarians via WebCT. Covering traditional and electronic methods of research,
the course carries two hours of academic credit. The course is open to all undergraduate
students.
