Myron House, Professor and Special Collections Librarian at Ingram Library, University of West Georgia obtained the A.B. in History from Georgia State University, the M.A. in History from Emory University, the M.S. L.S. from Atlanta University and did doctoral work in History at Georgia State University.
Prior to his arrival on the University of West Georgia campus to become Special Collections Librarian in 1980, Myron taught at Mundy’s Mill Junior High School in Clayton County, Georgia.
Myron can be credited with creating the Annie Belle Weaver Special Collections and Archives at the University of West Georgia from scratch. Through his efforts, and those of Dr. Mel Steely and the late Director of University Libraries Charles Beard, the University of West Georgia created Georgia’s Political Heritage Program, one of the key collections within Special Collections. Over the years, the university has obtained the political collections of former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich, Congressmen Bob Barr and Mac Collins, and former Georgia House Speaker Tom Murphy.
During his twenty-six years of service to the University of West Georgia, Myron has been involved in numerous committees and activities, including serving as a Faculty Senator and as an ex-officio member on several thesis committees. He served on both the Fiftieth Anniversary Observance Committee and the UWG Centennial Committee where his knowledge of university history proved invaluable.
Myron has been very active in promoting preservation and archival issues. He is a past president of the Society of Georgia Archivists, and has held a number of other offices with the organization. He has presented to groups such as the Organization of American Historians and the Georgia Music Educators. His interest in and talent for sacred harp singing was showcased as part of the American Sampler Series at the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History. Myron has made numerous presentations on preservation of historical documents and other resources to local historical and ancestral organizations and he frequently speaks on local history topics throughout the West Georgia region. In addition, Myron has co-authored a number of books on local and regional history, including From A&M to State University: A History of the State University of West Georgia.
Ingram Library and the University of West Georgia wish Myron all the best in his retirement. We look forward to reading the books on Georgia’s history he plans to write. Myron’s books will always have a place of honor on our library shelves.
