1I am working on my doctorate at Auburn University -- so I find research on line there when I can't find info at Ingram. However, Ingram is most useful when I need to find printed publications and has always had the ones I'ven needed.
1I use Emory University's collection most often, because it has the richest resources available in my field that are close at hand. Auburn and Georgia State also are useful. The GIL system has helped in the past, but because of my field of interest I must look beyond the collective holdings of campuses in the USG for research purposes. This means looking out of state and often out of country.
1I use GIL or Interlibrary loan to get the books I need. The particular library depends on what I am borrowing.

11. If you use other libraries, what resources or services do those libraries offer that are not available at UWG?
#Response
1 UWG does not have a research library. Period. It is impossible, for example, to survey the literature on a new topic without going to another library. Both the book selection and the selection of online resources are too small. This is not UWG's fault at all -- Ingram is what it is supposed to be, a teaching library for students. In that category, I am very happy with it. What I am unhappy with is our limited access to materials from other libraries. GIL is a terrible excuse for an interlibrary loan system. Again, not UWG's fault. But we are not getting a fair deal from the larger Georgia University system here.
1A collection of current journals and books.
1A much larger collection of monographs and journals
1access to online journals
1articles available online for printing
2Books
1Books on my research field, Arabic material for my courses
1Books, journals
1certain electronic databases; larger collections (for bibliographic citations)
1Current Periodicals collection is better
1Douglas County is geographically convenient but has extremely limited resources (a few good videos for class and that's about it); Emory has many resources not available here
1Extensive Electronic Journal Holdings
1extensive research materials in the stacks; a more comprehensive collection. (I don't see this as our library's function, so I'm not complaining here.)
1hard copies of journals library holdings in general

3Journals
1More electronic journals and more books, etc. on site
1more journals, books, etc.
1Most of the books and articles that I use for my research are not available at UWG. The only things that we have for my research are the items that I myself have ordered for the collection.
1Much deeper collection of children's and middle grades literature at the local public library (as is to be expected).
1Ovid, e-journals
1Part of it is likely my familiarity as an alumnae. I still have access there, so I often use the resources.
1Print and online versions of journals that UWG does not carry.
1Real Estate info

1Special collections holdings and more extensive collections of 19th century literature.
1Special collections, 19th/early 20th century magazine holdings
1special physics periodical whic I would need right away, say philosophical magazine journal.
1The resources available at other universities included important series of primary printed materials (e.g., the complete collection of the Hakluyt Society publications), larger periodical collections, special collections (specifically books published in the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, as well as hard to find items), and occasionally archival documents, though the latter is rarer simply because most collections of that kind deal with US history, political science, etc., as opposed to European, which is the focus of my research interests.
1They have a wider selection of the books I need
1They have books and journals that Ingram does not have. Ingram has virtually no German-language materials.
1They seem to have greater access to full text articles even on the same databases we have available. I don't understand this. Databases not available to UWG.
1To get pdf copies of some articles. I am more familiar with their web site. It is faste rfor me to get these copies fom there. However, as I am getting more familiar with UWG web site, I think I will rely on UWG libraries more in the future.
1Various journals, mostly
1Web of Science; more complete availability of electronic journals

From the perspective of a TEACHER, if you rated any of the items in Question 13 as Important (4) or Very Important (5), but indicated that the Library is not meeting your needs, please describe how your needs are not being met.
#Response
1 The library meets my teaching needs.
1Access to more electronic books and full-text online articles is desirable. I would prefer to use the money available for material requests for online resources.
1Access to particular books and journal articles (print or online) that I need to write lectures.
1Advanced students need to be hooked up with the latest electronic journals. They need to be able to download the article, put in to power point, and present the article in class. This preparation is essential for their careers. The resources to make this happen for students are very limited.
1Availablility of online full-text articles in my discipline needs to be increased.
1CD and online Recordings not adequate. As for Liaison in your list, I don't know what you mean. I went to your website and didn't see it listed. I could make an educated guess but....
1collection is quite limited
1electronic information navigation in general is daunting-so it's not necessarily your site that is a problem as much as unfamiliarity with the big picture of how it's done.
1Greater availability of electronic journals. But I find your ILL and GILExpress services fantastic. It would also help if I could renew books on-line. I frequently take seminal texts from the library and make them available to students in my office as class-reserves. I use the same books from year-to-year and it is frustrating to have to haul three dozen books back and forth each Fall and Spring.
1I am completely satisfied in this area.
1I do not receive follow-up on items I have ordered for classes (just an email stating that items were ordered would suffice); I have had trouble with reserves; films that I wanted to show for class have been lost (!!!) or loaned out for the semester (which is odd since faculty at UWG can only borrow them for a week) and then the library was unable to help me find the film
1I have had trouble getting the full text of articles I needed at times.
1I have reserved items twice. I've had no problems. Other than this, I've not used the library for my classes.
1I want more print journals and government document collections, MORE BOOKS, closer connection with library liasons and other personnel in working out library research projects for students
1I would really like to see the website become more user-friendly for both faculty and students. I know many of my grad students will use other libraries where they can access due to their frustration with the difficulty navigating our system. As well, I would love to see more resources for counselors, especially in the way of DVD's and hands-on activity guides.
1I've been addressing deficiency in book collections on western Europe's governments, but the journal collection for poli sci isn't great, and we don't have any of the special electronic search engines for poli sci.
1Ingram does not carry some of the health care, nursing or medical journals in print that I might use want to use so I have to find substitutes or have the students obtain the article online.
1Inspec
1Insufficient holdings in books and journals, lack of communication between library and faculty, library expects faculty to do all the work of locating/ordering books and placing items on reserve for courses
1Liasons don't know enough about my discipline to offer useful help. The staff in general is slow to respond to inquiries, if they respond at all.
1Limited resources in my are of expertise
1limited variety of print journals available in some areas and sometimes ILL access is restricted as well; I personally purchase a lot of these to have available for my students; situation is better with books although I also have a large personal collection accessibility issues
1my basic needs are journals and books. given the size and mission of our university, our library is quite good. yet, i need access to the library of a research university. uwg cannot be compared to such a university
1need more extensive collections of books and journals need an easier to use web site
1Not enough books on my subject to support student research papers
1Our Liason is not very knowledgeable about our subjet. It's a mismatch.
1Phone assistance seems limited to the extent of knowledge of the person answering the phone. New employees are often unable to answer questions and seem unsure or uninformed about who to refer questions to. Also, accuracy of circulation transactions needs improvement. More than once I have turned in a book and received an overdue notice afterward. Upon further inquiry, the books are always located having been shelved but not checked in.
1The course reserve system is hard to use--not intuitive--I have to print out and carefully read the instructions to figure out what I am doing--it should be easier to figure out how to do it while online. Also, the citation system for reserves is not aligned with my discipline's way of citing (the old reserves system was)--it's not clear what information is needed/being asked for, e.g., primary author and secondary author. For my students, the course reserves have too many pages/layers/steps--they should be able to access each article with one click.
1The library lacks several journals and books that my students need for their work. I've tried to tell them to order early, but this doesn't always work out. My students often express frustration at the amount the library holds.
1The library needs a section devoted to audio-visual. These materials should be in a more secure location as well--not out in the general stacks.
1The library's collection simply isn't large enough; students are often too rushed or too ill-informed to take advantage of ILL, etc. They tend to limit themselves to articles that are linked full-text.
1The library's history collection is quite weak. GIL Express, however, has been a tremendous asset. I am delighted with the program, which makes it easy to get material from other university system libraries. The journals in print are inadequate, which makes it difficult to keep up with current scholarship. I would urge the library in the strongest possible terms to never buy another historical monograph as an electronic book again. I know of no person who sits at a computer screen and reads a book online.
1Very simply put, the library currently lacks the resources, both financial and in terms of personnel, to meet the requirements I have listed above. Until there is increased funding for acquisition of books, periodicals and other resources, there is little likelihood that we will be able to expand current collections beyond creating a teaching library for students. Certainly the resources the library currently has are too insufficient to provide the necessary means for faculty research and probably would never be sufficient to do so. The same is true of personnel; it is difficult to find trained librarians and especially archivists, in order to staff the library fully in such a way, for example, that the special collections/archives section of the library could be open every week day from 9:00am until 5:00pm, instead of just for 2 hours as it currently is. More space also is required, meaning that capital funding must be made a priority for construction of additional library space, whether that is a new wing or addition stories on the building as it now stands. This is especially true if we ever hope to enhance such collections as the Georgia Political Heritage papers or the growing materials that are being acquired for Canadian Studies. The policy of the previous administration, which was to sink everything into technology, needs also to change to included enhanced acquisition of, and appreciation for, more traditional or conventional materials. While the electronic resources are essential for research and teaching today, they ought to be complementary to the printed word and not a substitute for such resources. Various efforts and plans are under way at present that are attempting to meet these needs, and perhaps some resources can be freed up or found to meet short-term requirements. But most of what the library needs in terms of building research collections beyond teaching requirements, additional space and personnel, are long term objectives.
1Video, DVD and/or books needed for class occassionaly disappeer from the library. I know this is concern for the library as well as faculty.
1We do not have print or full-text online access to some of he journals that are important to my upper level students. The course reserve process is cumbersome, at best. I would like the freedom to make reserve materials available quickly to my students - often, a student asks for access to materials and I'd like to be able to get a book or a packet of papers up the same afternoon in response to that student. The last time I used the reserve system, it took a number of days for reserve material to become available. For this reason, I abandoned using it. I know that some faculty have a reserve reading list that is determined well in advance of the course start time. That isn't how I would use course reserves - I would provide hard copy loose material (previous exams, worksheets, newspaper clippings, etc.) on an on-demand basis. I'm thinking here in terms of a course notebook that I could drop in and add material to without going through the cataloging system. Presently, I'm doing this via WebCT, and perhaps I'd never go back to print....
1We need to continue to get more electronic resources in that is becoming increasingly important to our online program.
1when print book collection is insufficient, it could be compensated by electronic resources, but as of yet there are few items online
1would like more videos/DVDs suitable for classroom use

16. Your use of the Library may differ in your role as a teacher or as a researcher.

From the perspective of a RESEARCHER, if you rated any of the items in Question 13 as Important (4) or Very Important (5), but indicated that the Library is not meeting your needs, please describe how your needs are not being met.
#Response
1 The library is not at all helpful for my research needs, except for its (still limited) access to full-text online journal articles. I am very dependent on GIL, and extremely unhappy with the way that system works. I am coming to the conclusion that I will have to buy many books that I would have preferred to borrow. I am also concluding that I will have to plan to travel for research.
1Access to more online journals would be helpful.
1Access to particular books and journal articles (print or online) that I need to pursue my research questions.
1Again, access to the latest electronic journal articles are simply essential.
1As a Medievalist, I cannot expect the library to have the books and the manuscripts I need.
1As above except for reserve items
1Better hours for those students who are not on campus full time - including UWG breaks.
1Books from other libraries must be returned so quickly....
1collection is quite limited
1I do not like the journals we now receive. There has been resistance in the past to changing those selections. I'm very pleased that we now have access to the Philosopher's Index. This makes a world of difference, now if we could just get the journals to match it would be great. On-line journals databases are not so easy to use. It would be helpful if document delivery did not cost anything.
1I do not use the library for research. Everything in there on my topic is out of date.
1I really like to look at print journals. They are helpful to me in many ways, including helping me to decide where to target my articles.
1I think the online access is pretty good. I guess I would like to see more online access.
1I want more books and journals in print I need more specialized assistance to help with my own unique research needs
1ILL is not always able to help me locate some materials.
1In order of importance, being able to take print journals out of the library to work with in home department is a critical need (even if for only 24 hours!), greater availability of electronic journals, and ability to renew books on-line.
1Inspec
1issues with print copies of some journals (and sometimes ILL access)
1Many of the journals and texts I need for my work are not available at the library and I have to order from GIL and ILL often.
1Many of the journals specific to my research needs are not maintained by the libraray; however, I have had not significant problems getting the materials required.
1My needs are primarily journal articles as I do 99% of my research online - when using Emory I was able to get virtually everything I needed online but find some frustration using Ingram online databases.
1need a more extnesive collection of books and journals
1Need more access to PDF files of journal articles. Need more access to PDF files of older journal articles.
1Not enough journals in print or electronic access
1Our collection is not being kept current, especially with regards to academic journals (JSTOR and MUSE are not searchable databases; they are only clearing houses, so they can not be used to conduct research unless one already knows what one is looking for, which is often not the case in research.)
1Print jounal collection is generally weak
1Print journals for my specific interests (English composition) are not available--this is made up for by being available online, but I still sometimes like to browse the articles. I've had to subscribe with my own funds to get these journals in print.
1Same as above.
1Same as number 15
1same issues, esp in terms of placing things on reserve and students have access to the books they need
1See my response to question 15.
1Seldom do I find the journal articles that I need. I usually must resort to ILL, which has worked well for me.
1Several journals are not available.
1The collection is tiny and does not have the books that I need for my research; the budget that our department receives is too small to make a dent in this problem; the library does not have a reference library for my department that has expertise in the field that I (or my colleagues) study and s/he cannot therefore make the purchases of new material to better the current collection; ILL and GIL don't work together, which means that when an article is unavailable on one (or if a mistake is made), the request is not forwarded but simply rejected, a frustrating occurance. Much of this needs to be improved. Communication appears to be an issue also; I am not convinced that the liaison system works well since the liaison does not necessarily have any awareness of the field that s/he is a liaison for.
1The collection of art history and visual studies texts is good, although very small. It could stand a few crucial additions (particularly in the realm of critical theory and the practice in interdisciplinary studies).
1The collection of print research materials and books is not quite as extensive as I need; however, the borrowing system usually works well. Occassionaly, I order a book or play through Gil or inter-library loan, and find out later that it is unavailable. However, overall, the ability to borrow between libraries works well, and I appreciate the library staff patience and help in securing these materials.
1The library does not have the resources to support research in primary sources in German history. I do not think that it should try, because that is not the mission of the institution. ILL does a good job.
1The library does not hold any of the microfilm collections that I need for my research.
1The library has excellent databases and ILL; however, the inability to browse print or online versions of the journals that I need is a problem. Sometimes articles abstracts or reviews make them look like they contain the information that I need, but when the article arrives, it doesn't. Having online versions of the journals would alleviate this.
1The main journals in my discipline are published by Elsevier, and we do not have access to them, either in print or in full-text online form. In order to access them, I must go to Emory or GA Tech. Furthermore, I cannot check out the journals that we DO have in print for photocopying purposes. I would much rather be able to check out several bound journals at once, walk to my building, and photocopy the necessary articles (using double-siding, reducing, enlarging, high-quality photo copying if necessary, etc.) without the necessity of paying cash for the process on an inferior copy machine. A two-hour checkout policy for journals would go a long way toward fixing this difficulty. Currently, I find it more efficient to simply take my research to Emory and download the articles I need to read. I have not set foot in our library for research purposes for two years.
1The on-line pages seem to get less user-friendly every time the system is "improved." It was clearer before.
1the only deficiency I have found in research items availability has been for specialized video/dvd which are held by so few libraries and they are so reluctant to lend. This could be overcome electronically, but I am doubtful about the prospects for that.
1Truthfully, if I need something, I just keep calling until I get it. So far, your staff has always met my needs!
1Unfortunately the articles I need are never available. I understand it costs a lot of money and i don't hold any grief towards the library for not having the articles available (online or not).
1We simply do not have enough materials in my field. The ones that we do have are often outdated.
1We used to be able to borrow periodicals overnight to bring them back the next day. We need that back. It would be good to have a web list of the new titles that have come in and where to find them. We lose track of what we ask the library to get.
1While our library has very few journals that I use in my research, I have been pleased with the interlibrary loan service as well as the electronic availability of several journals. I would really like to see the availability or access to the journals via JSTOR or other electronic means increase in the future.
1With access to electronic texts and GIL, I can get most everyting I need. I would of course be wonderful to be a be able to browse more extensively in collections related to my areas of specialization (19th century American and Lingusitics) but that is not feasible given the library resources and the libraries holdings in those areas are adequate for basic research.
1would like more print journals available in my areas of study

1 Carol Goodson is an angel. She has provided me not just with practical help relating to my teaching and research, but also with real insight into the ways work practices need to adapt in a place like this. It would hardly be an exageration to say that she's made a real difference to my happiness as a faculty member here, and my willingness to stay here in the long term.
1Accreditation studies. ComDis Dome.
1assistance with finding publications that were important to my research
1can't tell
1Carol is THE most valuable resource in my opinion in terms of my use of the library. Most everything I can find online or on my own, but whenever I have had trouble locating something or am seeking information (most recently with several DLB articles I was writing), she found the information. She is instrumental to my research and I great appreciate her assistance.
1Collection development, communication about services, information about placing requests for purchases....
1Collection development.
1compilation of information and important links in a central location linked to the library site
1course research guides; course presentation; info about acquistions; general reference help
1Finding older documents
1For the department - collection development. I haven't used our liaison since coming 6 months ago - perhaps I am missing out on an excellent resource and need to check it out.
1great new faculty orientation was provided- again, just have not had time to use the resources.
1have not interacted with current liaison
1He provided a list of all holdings relevant to our discipline. He gave a seminar to instruct faculty on how to locate materials.
1Heled me order books for the library.
1help with electronic reserves
1Helped with finding journal articles in databases.
1Holding classes for students concerning the library and its use.
1I am new at UWG. This is a very important service. I am delighted that you are providing this service. I am using it for my teaching. I will use it for research as well. Thanks.
1I have never heard of a liaison before.
1I have not requested much from our liaison
1I have NOT used a Library Liaison - so this question does not sound logical to me. I think I have not understood the diretcions. Should I have been directed to go to Question 20 instead of 19 in Question 17?
1Made a presentation to faculty who attended on current copyright law.
1Made class presentations. Collection Development
1my liaison has done class presentations on resources in the library
1My liaison, Carol Goodson, is the best at providing assistance in all aspects of my teaching.
1My liason has provided assistance in many diverse ways. She always makes sure I get what I need.
2None
1Our library liaison has been very helpful in giving guest presentations, providing some addition funding for acquisition of books and other resources, consulting over research and training of students for specific classes.
1Presentation to a research class in summer.
1Really, I've only consulted our liason once. I was working on a presentation that needed to be completed "yesterday." Despite this, he was very helpful. I got exactly what I was hoping for from him.
1research
1Research consultation
1She has always been willing to assist us and has provided excellent assistance.
1She has come to department meetings and shared up to date news with the department and her services so individuals are aware of how she can assist them and the department during the year. This has been appreciated.
1She was able to get an answer as to whether films I had requested had actually been ordered. When I wrote to the head of acquisitions, with whom I had initially placed the order, I received a printout of all films ordered by my department in the past two years which did not include any of the request in question and was told that I could "check by title on the UWG catalogue." Since this answer was wholly inadequate, I was grateful that the liaison was able to get an answer, but should not have had to go through such rigamarole for a simple question.
1Since our department has a new library liaison, I cannot answer this question. Howerver, the new liaison seems to be very engaged and interested in meeting the departmental needs.
1taken time to review new services with me; respond quickly to answer questions
1Teaching my students how to use the Library better!
1The liaison is most willing to help. The department should be more cooperative.
1The Liason has been very helpful in working with faculty to reviewing and updating our collection and assisting with site visits by national accreditation and state approval bodies.
1tour of library to Music majors responds to requests quickly Offers to do more
1Visited our department meetings
20. In the past two years, have you ever included in your courses any class or group instruction by librarians in the effective use of library and Web resources or methods of conducting library research?

1A word of explanation on dissatisfaction with equipment: I have punched a hole in the upper left corner (as seen from the front) of my ID card and inserted it on a key ring. This allows me to swipe the card for door access and for the newspaper machines, but NOT for library checkout. The last time I had to laboriously remove the card from the key ring for inserting into the library card reader. I haven't checked anything out since!
1Admittedly, I have much to learn about the Ingram Library.
1All tenure track faculty here have to do research that requires resources Ingram will never have, and should not have. I know that GIL is not under local direction, but some lobbying to improve that system would be wonderful. The loan periods are far to short, notification that books are coming due is rare, and renewal *usually* does not work as it is supposed to. Sometimes one can perform a renewal from the website of the lending library when the same renewal won't go through from the home account. But this is an insane amount of work for someone trying to manage a dozen or more books at a time. Also, once one book is overdue, you can't request or renew any more until that book is not just in at Ingram, but back at the home library. If I only needed one book every month or so, this would all be no problem. But the reality is that you can't work in my field without doing broad surveys of any topic you write on. The problems with GIL add up to something a lot worse than hassle. Again, Ingram has been nothing but helpful to me. But my "quality of library life" overall is pretty low here.
1As every department in the College of Arts & Sciences has (or at least should have) a library representative for their faculty who works with the library liaison attached to those departments, it would be very useful to create an advisory committee of these persons, chaired by the Library Director, that would meet periodically to discuss ways, means, needs, priorities, as well as enhance communication across disciplines with the library.
1For anyone who is uncomfortable with electronic information navigation, offer an obvious "how to get started" icon.
1I am very pleased with the services and especially with the staff. Would love to see our library be able to expand and grow rather than seeing more $$ pumped in to gigantic student centers. Hopefully one day we will become a real university and put academic priorities before social ones. Until then, the library continues to do a good job with very limited resources. Many thanks for what you do.
1I often wonder why a state system that is so centralized, does so little to ensure adequate resource sharing among the constituencies. Why, shouldn't the resources be allocated so that all Georgia System institutions have direct on-line access to the electronic journals held by UGA and GS?
1I've always found everyone very heplful, and that's a good thing. I like our library.
1ILL staff and Carol Goodson are terrific!
1In the past couple years, I've pretty much given up asking the library for anything. I felt that my earlier inquiries were dismissed out of hand or met with hostility. Rarely were our opinions solicited, and I was told repeatedly that my priorities as a teacher or researcher were not shared by senior library management. I hope that this situation changes - I'd very much like to use our library, and be able to encourage my students to do so.
1Interlibrary loan has been very helpful and effective; the on-line full text databases have also been very helpful. Wehn I have needed help, someone in the library has always provided it. I have no complaints about the library at all.
1It would be nice if we could log into other libraries in the USG and use their electronic collections.
1Library staff and resources have been invaluable to me and my students during my time here at West Georgia. I am truly grateful.
1My lower mark on question 21 is related to my master's level course. These students are all off campus. They struggle to figure out passwords, and which ways to get to on-line articles. Since I do not do this much, I always refer them to the reference librarian for guidance. Should I do something different?
1My main feelings come from the recent incident described on the previous page about my asking for the status of a request. I found this so shocking that it has colored much of the rest of my feeling about the library. I emphasize that the library needs to improve communication first. While it will not ever have the collection necessary for most faculty's research, it could have polite, responsive, and competent staff members.
1need better copy machines; need better parking and access
1Need to be more accessible. Need to allow faculty to borrow periodicals on a 24 hour basis. Need to have a way to inform faculty about the new titles through a list available in the web. Need to match the liason better with the department assigned.
1Once again, expand the availability of journals (electronic)
1Please change the name of our department to Media and Instructional Technology not RMT.
1Please let faculty know how the library will address the growing population of both students and faculty in terms of their research needs.
1Please work with us to allow more books and journals in the collection and less electronic resources, or at least do not replace print collections with electronic ones
1since library instruction in research methods is now possible in classrooms which have internet capabilities, I no longer use library services for this, as I can do it myself. A shift in your address of this classroom need might be useful, but I do not have a more specific suggestion for this.
1Some of the "educational" exhibits have been one-sided crude one-sided propgaganda pieces that have reflected poorly on the university and the library director.
1Thanks for supporting our department.
1The access to online journals and other resources through the databases is AWESOME! I have been able to locate just about everything I have tried to find and when I can't... there is always another source that serves the same purpose...
1The few times I went to pick up articles at the library, people at the desk were very rude until they realized I was a faculty member and then suddenly they started being nice. Most of the staff on campus behaves that way with me, however I don't think it is right for anybody to be treated differently because they look like students and not faculty. let's not forget students are the ones who eventually pay a big chunk of our salaries!
1The staff of the library has always been very helpful to me. I think I'm a heavy user of GIL Express and ILL and the people are uniformly helpful and pleasant. My dissatisfaction with the library's holdings and facilities should not be read as criticism of library staff. I close with the plea: give the library more money to buy more printed books and journals!
1We need Inspec.
1You are doing a great job with limited resources. My only comment may be about book collection. It is somewhat neglected. But I know that I can get any missing book from GIL. The issue is, I like physical library environment. Elecronic library is good in terms of getting your resources fast, however it deprives the opportunity of browsing and sitting at the library with a couple of books and enjoying yourself. (Think about a reading lounge and a coffee shop in the library!)
