If the increase in number of citations between this edition of the Bibliography and the first are any indication, interest in the field of library support for distance education is growing geometrically: a rough average of 9 entries per year for the 60-year period preceding 1990 zooms to more than 68 per year for the short time between 1990 and the publication of this book!
This work does pick up some pre-1990 items which were missed in the first edition and revises a few entries from the previous version, for which more information was subsequently found. It also includes a completely new category, "Remote Access to Electronic Resources," added because the topic has now become crucial for librarians working with distance education students. Another fresh and highly useful feature is the geographic index to entries, reflecting the editors' recognition of the fact that many of the most exciting and innovative approaches in this unique field of library service are being developed outside the United States.
The annotations are succinct, clear, well-written and highly useful to the practitioner looking for new ideas and advice. Shameful as this is to admit publicly, I long ago "permanently" checked out our library's copy of the 1991 edition for my office, because I found it so indispensable; I have no doubt that I shall do the same thing with this one. At the relatively modest price (for well-bound academic books) of $65.00, I'd say this is a "must-purchase" item for any library engaged in providing support to remote students.
