How Do I Find an Article? - step by step instructions
- To find an article on a topic, you should start with a periodical database
that covers your subject. Start by visiting the main online Databases by subject area page. DO NOT go
to
GIL, our catalog. You cannot find articles using the library catalog.
- The databases are listed by subject. Select a database that covers publications
in your subject area. For instance, if you are looking for articles for your psychology
class, click “Psychology.”
- Then choose a database from the list of selections under the subject you
chose.
- Once you have selected a database, enter keywords into the search box.
You may need to use multiple keywords and/or synonyms. For information about
entering terms and combining searches, and other database features, click on the
HELP link in the database you are using, or ask a reference librarian for assistance.
- When you enter search terms, the index will retrieve a list of citations
to articles on your topic. These "citations" display the author
and title of the article, and the title, volume, date and page number of the
magazine or journal in which the article appeared. Sometimes, an "abstract",
or summary, of the article is also provided.
- Once you have located the citation to the article(s) you want, the next step is to
locate the actual article. In some cases the full-text of the article will be available
on-line from the database you are using or through Find It @
UWG. However, some of our databases do not include the full text of the
articles they cover. To find these articles, you will need to note the full citation
information, including:
- The Journal title
- The date of Publication
- The article title
- The volume number, issue number, and pages
- With this information, you can go to our Journal Locator or to our Catalog
(GIL) to determine whether Ingram Library provides access to the periodical in
print.
- If the Ingram Library does not have the title and volume you need, you
may order it via Interlibrary Loan.
