Abbreviations in Comments on Essays/Homework

 

awk -- awkward phrasing (you need to rephrase so the sentence sounds more fluent)

 

c.s. -- comma splice (you used a comma where you needed a period or semi-colon. See handbook 453-459)

 

clarify -- clarify grammar/sentence stucture

 

conj -- conjunction (do not start a sentence with a conjunction)

 

contr -- contraction (ex. isn’t, doesn’t, can’t. Do not use contractions in formal writing. If you use a contraction in informal writing, remember the apostrophe.)

 

dangl. mod. -- dangling modifier (see handbook 406-410)

 

expl -- explain more clearly

 

faulty parallelism -- see handbook 403-406

 

fragment -- sentence fragment (incomplete sentence. See handbook 446-452)

 

mispl. mod. -- misplaced modifier (see handbook 406-410)

 

mixed constr -- mixed construction (see handbook 397-399)
