Peer Editing Instructions (Do this with your own essay as well)

 

      Read the introduction.

·         Does the opening sentence include the title, author, and date?

·         Is the thesis statement clear? Is it debatable (i.e. can you think of a good counterargument to the thesis)?

 

      For each main body paragraph, with a pen or highlighter, label the identification, illustration(s), and interpretation(s).

·         Is the topic sentence (identification) clear? Does it make a debatable claim? Does it support the thesis statement?

·         Do all of the other sentences in the paragraph back up the topic sentence?

·         Does the paragraph contain enough quotes? Are the quotes fluidly integrated into sentences?

·         Is each quote accompanied by interpretation? Does the interpretation tell you something you hadn’t thought of before?

 

Read the conclusion.

·         Does it recap the central argument?

·         Does it reflect on the significance of the argument?

·         Does it raise further questions for analysis?

 

Re-read the essay.

·         Are there errors of MLA format?

·         Are there errors of grammar, spelling, or vocabulary?
