Dr. LaFountain teaches courses on phenomenological sociology, critical
theory and cultural politics, art, the body, visual sociology, and environmental
sociology. As Chair of the Environmental Studies Curriculum Committee,
he was instrumental in developing UWG’s interdisciplinary environmental
studies program (BS, Environmental Science; BS, Environmental Studies).
His current research focuses on visual and environmental literacy, ethics
and cultural politics, art and media, and the body. He has published
chapters, articles, and reviews across a variety of disciplines including,
philosophy, psychology, communications, and art and literary criticism.
His book, Dali and Postmodernism, was published by SUNY Press. In addition
to his research, he also serves the larger community in his work as
an environmental educator and advocate. In his roles as Co-Chair of
the Carroll County Tree Advisory Commission, a member of the Environmental
Projects Committee of the Carroll County Chamber of Commerce, and as
a member of Carroll Tomorrow’s committee on the quality of life, he
applies in practical settings things examined in his courses. When he
isn’t doing these things, you can find him in his gardens and woods,
working on his watercolors and poetry, cooking, and with his dog, Sophie,
and kitties, Abbie and Yogi.
