SCHOLARSHIPS
To apply for any of the scholarships
listed below, complete the application
and return it to the Department of Mathematics office.
Chatty Pittman
Scholarship
The
scholarship fund was established by friends, family, and colleagues as a
memorial to Dr. Chatty Pittman, a professor of mathematics for 36 years, who
also served as Department Chairman for 30 years. The Chatty Pittman Scholarship shall be awarded annually to
a rising junior or senior majoring in mathematics with evidence of good
character, service to the University of West Georgia, and leadership potential.
The total amount generated by this fund is approximately $800. The recipient is chosen by the Department of
Mathematics.
Requirements:
1.
An
overall GPA of 3.2 or higher;
2.
Junior
or senior majoring in mathematics with evidnce of good character, service to
the University of West Georgia, and leadership potential;
3.
Current enrollment at UWG.
David Cooley
Scholarship
The
scholarship fund was established by Carleton Cooley on behalf of his son David
Cooley. The David Cooley
Scholarship shall
be awarded annually to an outstanding rising senior who is majoring in
mathematics with preference for choir members and/or student government
members.
The
total amount generated by this fund is approximately $500.
The recipient is chosen by the Department of Mathematics.
Requirements:
1.
An
overall GPA of 3.2 or higher;
2.
Outstanding
senior majoring in mathematics with preference for choir members and/or student
government members;
3.
Current enrollment at UWG.
Dr. Georgia Martin
Scholarship
The
scholarship fund was established by Geneva Martin on behalf of her mother, Dr.Georgia Martin, who was Associate Dean of Student Services for West Georgia
College from 1966 until her retirement in 1979.
The
Dr. Georgia Martin Scholarship shall
be awarded annually to an outstanding rising junior or senior who is majoring
in mathematics.
The
total amount generated by this fund is approximately $1500.
The recipient is chosen by the Department of Mathematics.
Requirements:
1.
An
overall GPA of 3.2 or higher;
2.
Outstanding
junior or senior majoring in mathematics;
3.
Current enrollment at UWG.
Vachel Davis
Whatley, Jr. Scholarship
The
scholarship fund was established by George Fields Whatley in honor of Vachel
Davis Whatley, Jr. The recipient
is chosen by the Department of Mathematics. The Vachel Davis Whatley, Jr.
Scholarship
shall be
awarded annually to a sophomore, junior, or senior at the University of West
Georgia who intends to complete a four-year curriculum at West Georgia,
graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in mathematics. The recipient must be a Georgia
resident, with preference given to Carroll County, Polk County, or Troup County
residents. The total amount
generated by this fund is approximately $350. The
recipient is chosen by the Department of Mathematics.
Requirements:
1.
An
overall GPA of 3.2 or higher;
2.
Sophomore,
junior, or senior at the University of West Georgia who intends to complete a
four-year curriculum at West Georgia, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree
in mathematics;
3.
The
recipient must be a Georgia resident, with preference given to Carroll County,
Polk County, or Troup County residents;
4.
Current enrollment at UWG.
Marion
Crider Award
In honor of Marion Crider, a dedicated, caring and enthusiastic
professor of mathematics who served at the College for 23 years, and who also
served as a department chairperson, the Department of Mathematics presents
annual monetary awards to juniors or seniors in recognition of academic
excellence, leadership and the potential for success in the field of
mathematics. Friends, family, colleagues and alumni established the
monetary fund that supports these superior student awards as a memorial to
Professor Crider.
The
Marion Crider Scholarship
shall be
awarded annually to three
juniors or seniors in
recognition of academic excellence, leadership and the potential for success in
the field of mathematics. The total amount generated by this fund is approximately $5200. The recipients are chosen by the Department
of Mathematics
Requirements:
1.
An
overall GPA of 3.2 or higher;
2.
Juniors or seniors in recognition of academic excellence,
leadership and the potential for success in the field of mathematics;
3.
Current enrollment at UWG.
Mrs. Jewell Miles
Burson Calculus Award
An
award given to an undergraduate student who has completed Calculus 1 and 2 at
West Georgia and shows great promise as a potential mathematics or science
major. The total amount generated
by this fund is approximately $0. The
recipients are chosen by the Department of Mathematics.
Requirements:
1.
An
overall GPA of 3.2 or higher;
2.
Calculus 1 and Calculus 2 completed;
3.
Current enrollment at UWG.
