Course Description: (Non-credit for mathematics major or minor). Elementary number theory with emphasis on relevance to teaching at the P-8 level.

but not limited to): Natural Numbers, Well Ordering Principle and
Mathematical Induction, Pythagorean Triples, Divisibility, Greatest Common
Factor and Least Common Multiple, Primes, The Fundamental Theorem of
Arithmetic, The Chinese Remainder Theorem, Congruence.
(Selected
as time permits): Square and Triangular Numbers, Binomial Coefficients,
Gaussian Numbers, Irrational and Transcendental Numbers.
Learning
Objectives:
1.
The
student will demonstrate a more precise and correct use of mathematical symbols
and grammar.
2.
The
student will demonstrate a more precise and correct use of English grammar.
3.
The
student will state precisely important definitions and theorems of Number
Theory and will reword the technical jargon to the level of students in P-8.
4.
The
student will show an understanding of the basic facts and tools of Number
Theory and will use this understanding to solve related problems.
5.
The
student will demonstrate where the topics covered in this course occur in the
Quality Core Curriculum (QCC) of Georgia.
Assessment:
Homework. 2-5 problems will be assigned per chapter and one shall be chosen by the instructor to be graded for 0-2 points. The student will chose a problem not assigned to be graded for 0-2 points for correctness and an extra 0-2 points for difficulty. The homework is due on the following class period unless otherwise instructed.
3 Tests 75 minute tests given during
class period. Approximate dates are
listed below. There will be a week’s
notice given before a test.
Project The student will find Number
Theory topics that are listed in the Georgia QCC’s for P-8 (or high school if
the student teaches at the high school level) and discuss how they where
covered in the class.
Final The final shall be comprehensive.
Your
course grade is based on 6 parts as follows:

points
* The points on the final may be used to replace lowest points
scored on a test if less than the final.
The
points for the letter grade is:
A > 450 > B > 400 >
C > 350 > D > 300 > F.
