Textbook: Calculus, Early Transcendentals (4^th edition) by Stewart

Description: This is the second course of the Calculus sequence and covers all classical methods of integration, their different applications and the study of series. We shall cover the chapters 6-7-8-10-11 and whenever possible use the Computer Algebra System – MapleV8 in TLC1116 on Tuesdays.

Objectives: The student will be able

· To convert the limit of a Riemann sum into an integral (L1)

· To evaluate an area, or volume (L9)

· To decide whether to use the method of disks, washers or shells (L1, L9)

· To integrate by substitution and by parts (L1, L9)

· To apply the convergence tests to improper integrals (L1, L9)

· To apply the various trigonometric identities for substitution (L1)

· To approximate integrals by the trapezoidal and Simpson’s rule (L8)

· To find the error by Simpson’s rule (L8)

· To set and evaluate the hydrostatic force and other simple applications (L1)

· To convert and sketch a parametric or polar curves (L1)

· To classify a sequence and find its limits (L1, L2)

· To apply the test of convergence for series (L9)

· To numerically approximate a series with a given accuracy (L8)

· To find the radius of convergence of a power series (L1)

· To construct a power series of a function and study its convergence (L7)

· To use a computer algebra system (such as Maple) to symbolically perform any computation related to the above topics and analyse/interpret the computer output (L9).

Tests: There will be 3 class tests, 100 points each, given on:

Test 1: June 24^th, Test 2: July 8^th, Test 3: July 22^nd.

Quizzes: A weekly quiz will be given on Tuesdays and will mainly cover questions from the homework. Each quiz counts 20 points towards your final grade and the best 5 quizzes are counted.

Final Exam: The final exam is Thursday, 31^st July , 10:00-12:00 and counts 200 points towards your final grade.

Evaluation: (Tests) 3x100 points+ (Quizzes) 5x20 points+(Final) 200 points=600points.

Grading: F=[0, 360), D=[360, 420), C=[420, 480), B=[480, 540), A=[540, 600].

W Deadline: July 2^nd is the last day to withdraw with grade of W.
