Unlike many regional universities, which were founded as teachers’ colleges, the University of West Georgia was established in 1906 as the 4th District Agricultural and Mechanical School. Today, UWG is a dynamic institution, designated as one of Georgia’s four Robust Tier doctoral-granting, comprehensive universities. Located about an hour’s drive from Atlanta, the Carrollton campus is considered one of the most beautiful in the University System. From an enrollment of 576 in 1957, the student body has grown to more than 11,000. UWG is also rapidly expanding online courses, extending its reach across the state and nation. UWG has been named among America’s Best Southeastern Colleges every year since 2004.

Educator preparation programs at the University of West Georgia were reviewed by NCATE and the Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) with an on-site visit in April 2011. Based on a review of all documents, extensive interviews with faculty, students, and professional partners, the visiting team, and subsequently the Board of Review for NCATE, determined that Standard Two was not met. Consequently, the College of Education was accredited for 2 years with a requirement that another team visit the University in April of 2013. The focus of this visit will be the Unit Assessment System. Following that focused visit, NCATE and the PSC will make a determination about the continued accreditation of the College of Education. There are two possible outcomes of this visit. First, the COE will pass Standard Two and will have accreditation extended to 7 years. Or, the COE will not pass Standard Two and will not receive accreditation.
