SCHOLARSHIP NEWS!

The Mark Coppage Nursing Scholarhip

Mark Coppage, M.D. died on March 3, 1989 in an automobile accident in Florida. Although the years have continued to roll by, his absence is still keenly felt by the DeKalb Medical Center community in which he practiced and to which he gave so much of his energy and spirit. The difference that Dr. Mark Coppage made in the community is legendary, each person he encountered felt enriched and inspired.

An anonymous donor established the Dr. Mark Coppage Nursing Scholarship Fund to sustain his memory and the remarkable principles for which he stood. Since this scholarship was established in 1993, 50 scholarships have been given, totaling over $100,000. This scholarship is open to individuals who represent some of the outstanding human qualities for which Dr. Mark Coppage was so well known.

In the Fall of 2008, DeKalb Medical Center received 40 applications from Nursing students in Georgia. Out of 40 applicants, only 15 were interviewed, and 3 awarded. The School of Nursing is proud to announce that Susan Irwin (BSN Program-Newnan) was awarded $5,000 as the Dr. Mark Coppage Scholar. There were two runners-up for this prestigeous award, one of which was Judy Gachoka (BSN Program-Carrollton) who was awarded $3,000.

The information for service cancellable loans is as follows:

___ IMPORTANT: The Georgia State Legislature appropriates loan funds for these fields each year. Therefore, availability may change during the year if budget cuts are necessary. Due to limited service cancelable loan benefits and the large number of applicants, GSFA cannot provide assistance to every applicant. Our school's allocation amount is awarded to applicants with a completed financial aid file by April 1.

___ A completed financial aid file consists of a student aid report (ISIR) resulting from a filed Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and all paperwork required by the financial aid office.

___ Preference is given to the previous year's recipients then on a first come first serve basis.

___ You will be sent an application packet after June 30, only if there are service cancelable funds awarded to you.

Questions regarding these loans should be directed to the Financial Aid Office.
