Teaching Philosophy:
As a person, nurse, and educator I value caring and honesty as much as skill acquisition and content mastery. I value the promotion of individual dignity and respect as well as collaboration and cooperation. Additionally I value mutual respect, trust, competence, and excellence as well. I believe educators should be models of professional nursing practice. I feel that the learning process is a positive experience when students do not fear their teachers. I believe connected learning through personal and professional knowing between student-and-teacher promotes the development of an egalitarian relationship that promotes learning.
I do not believe teachers have all the answers. I believe we all teach and we all learn. I believe we are all responsible for what we learn. I believe it is my role as educator to challenge, affirm, inspire, mentor, and nurture aspiring nurses, but with the realization that others are motivated by relevant content and their own internal forces. I believe learning is an active process that involves the entire being, and that the process of learning is just as important as content.
My nursing philosophy guides my role as a nurse educator. As a nurse educator, I envision my students gaining new knowledge, creating new knowledge, and treasuring education. I strive for my classes to be interesting, engaging, creative, and above all, effective. My goal in each class is to see the learner’s interest in the subject increase, to see the learner’s knowledge of the subject increase, and to witness the transference of classroom knowledge into clinical practice.
