Teaching Philosophy:
I personally get such a thrill each time the "light comes on" signaling that I have learned something new or have experienced the value of practical application of knowledge. Those who know me well describe me as a "professional student" because I enjoy learning so much. The transition from clinical nurse specialist to teacher seemed natural for I found I also get a thrill each time I see the "light come on" in another person.
Teaching has been described as involving a teacher and a student interacting over a subject in a setting (Davis, 1997). I do believe that learning is a process of gaining knowledge and skills through study, instruction, experience, a way of knowing and thinking that results in the development of behavior that grows, adapts and changes over a life time. Through the process each of us in turn learns and teaches whether through individual study efforts or interaction with others. My teaching philosophy could be described simply as a belief that teaching involves teacher and student interacting, both with responsibility to affect the quality and eventual outcome—the “light truly coming on.” Therefore, I make a commitment to those in my classes, that I will create an environment for interaction which is very representative of the world in which the nurse will practice—novice with expert, each growing personally and professionally as we learn the science and the art of nursing.
