Teaching Philosophy:
I believe that learning occurs as individuals seek to understand and find meaning in what they do. An individual’s experiences bring them to a point of needing or wanting to learn something, to solve a problem or to understand that which is unclear. Learning is fostered by an environment which recognizes and respects differences in motivation, ability, and previous experience. Teachers guide the learning process, and may have intended learning outcomes, but what is learned is determined by the meaning the learner derives from the situation.
Teachers and learners are travelers on a journey to seek meaning and to reach a destination. Ideally, the destination (or goal of the learning experience) is the same for both. At times, the teacher and learner do not see the destination or intention for the journey in the same way, and the teacher may lead the way until the learner experiences the need to reach the destination. Teachers create a facilitative path that encourages full participation by learners. Learners come to the journey with past experience that enrich the learning process and both teachers and learners help each other reach the destination.
Reaching the destination requires mutual effort, and either teacher or learner may suggest ways to get there. The teacher usually plans the route by suggesting ways to reach the destination (learning activities), but recognizes that individuals learn differently and learners may know better ways to reach the destination (goal or objective). Learners may lead the way to the destination, or may find an alternate route. Both teachers and learners are responsible for reaching the destination and each contributes to the work in getting there.
