We met at 2pm in Humanities 211. The following people were in attendance:
Dr. Lane began the meeting by announcing two undergraduate philosophy conferences: the North Georgia Student Phil Conference (Kennesaw, April 1-2, 2005, and the Midsouth Undergraduate Phil Conference (Memphis, TN, Feb 18-19). Links to the official conference web sites are now on the Phil Program web page (http://www.westga.edu/~phil/)
Dr. Lane announced that he has emailed all philosophy majors and minors who he believed to be eligible to join Phi Sigma Tau (the national honor society in philosophy). If you believe that you are eligible and have not received an email from Dr. Lane about that organization, please contact him.
Brian Larkin moved that the office of Sergeant-at-Arms be eliminated. The motion carried unanimously. After the vote (held during the October 1, 2004 meeting) to merge the offices of Secretary and Treasurer, the Phil Society now has only three offices: President, VP, and Secretary-Treasurer.
We held elections. Our officers for the 2004-05 year are:The subject of discussion was determinism and free will. Zach began the discussion by briefly describing what's at stake in the free will debate and sketching some of the available positions. We discussed the topic for about 45 minutes.
The next meeting will be Friday October 29 at 2pm. Neither Dr. Lane nor Dr. Donohoe will be at the meeting. The group will probably meet at the Mansion rather than on campus; the actual location will be announced by email the week of the meeting.
Brian volunteered to select the topic of discussion for the next meeting; he will let us know via email what the topic will be. (The responsibility for selecting the philosophical topic to be discussed at meetings will continue to circulate among the members.)
Submitted respectfully,
Robert Lane, advisor
