Phases of Alumni Development

This list is by no means 100% accurate, and will vary case by case and depending on the collegiate institutions.  This list is adapted from the Phi Delta Theta Fraternity.

1.  Age 21-26

The Undergraduate joins the alumni ranks.  During this time, a young alumnus can better identify with undergraduates than he can with older alumni.  He still knows many of the brothers in the chapter and can go back and feel like part of "the guys."  loyalty to the chapter is stronger, major concerns at this stage are finding the right career, possibly finding a significant other, paying school loans.  In many cases he or she has little money that can be donated at this point.  younger alumnus may begin to find other activities to become involved with.  Towards the end of this phase, he or she may start to slip away from the activities of the chapter.

2.  26-36

Number of familiar faces among the undergraduate chapter has dwindled and/or disappeared altogether.  The alumnus can walk into the chapter as a stranger and feel out of place.  More pressing concerns exist in this such as kids, marriage, family, career, kids, buying a home, kids.  Other groups/organizations take more of an already booked schedule.  If not drawn back at this time, it is very well possible that the he or she is lost forever to Phi Sigma Pi.

3.  36-56

A much Greater degree of stability is achieved in terms of career and finances.  Civic involvement tends to increase, with most of the family growing up or actually grown. During this period,  he or she would have celebrated 25 years of being a brother in Phi Sigma Pi.  Sons or daughters may begin to attend college, alumni parents may recommend both their alma mater and their fraternity.  Fraternity legacies begin to appear.

4.  Ages 56 and over

Offspring begin having kids.  Alumnus may have a secure job band even thoughts of retirement.  50th anniversary of membership in the fraternity celebrated.
