A Peter Russell Workshop The Art of Letting Go Friday, March 16, 9:00 am – 1:00 pm Martha Monro Building, Room 105 CEUs available With his characteristic blend of physics, psychology, philosophy and mysticism, Peter Russell shows that the next great frontier of human exploration is not outer space, but inner space—research into the nature of consciousness itself. Modern science, which has enjoyed so much success in furthering our understanding of the material world, has singularly failed to account for consciousness. Yet without consciousness there would be no science. As far as the contemporary scientific worldview is concerned, consciousness is one big anomaly. We are, Peter Russell argues, on threshold of a revolution in worldview even more profound and far-reaching than that initiated by Copernicus 500 years ago. All the pieces for the new worldview are in place. Nothing new needs to be discovered. All that is required is for us to put the pieces together and explore the new picture of the cosmos that emerges. When we do we discover a world in which the worldviews of science and spirituality no longer conflict, but represent two different views of reality. Such a convergence is most needed today, for it is the spiritual aridity of contemporary culture that lies behind the many crises facing humanity. Now, more than ever, we must find ways to liberate ourselves from the dysfunctional, egocentric modes of thinking that lie at the root of so many of problems, and uncover the immense potentials inherent in consciousness itself. We need to understand the true nature of mind. Spiritual adepts across all cultures repeatedly make clear that those qualities we most long for—peace, love, freedom, fulfillment—lie at the core of our being, not in the material world upon which Western culture has been so focused. Such qualities are the essence of consciousness.
The Workshop"Just let go!" people advise. "I wish I knew how to let go," others complain, exasperated. Letting go never seems easy. That is because we usually approach letting go as something to do. We may know it is the opposite—an undoing—but that does not make it any easier. We often to look outside for help, but our perfect teacher is our higher self, which already knows precisely what we need to let go of, and how to let it happen. Just below the threshold of consciousness, the quiet voice of our own inner knowing beckons to us, showing us the easiest, most direct way to return to our true nature, and find the peace and joy that we yearn for. After many years of research into the nature of consciousness Peter Russell has developed new approaches to meditation that deepen and clarify the practice. He has found that by opening to the wisdom of our true self, the guru within, we can step more rapidly through inner resistance and release the mind more easily from accumulated attachments. There has been much talk over the years of the need for a shift in consciousness, but little on how this might be achieved. Most spiritual traditions agree that a fundamental part of this shift is a letting go—whether it be of attachments, judgments, illusions or ego. But how do we let go? It often seems so hard. That is because we usually approach letting go as something to do, rather than a releasing of something we are already doing. Peter Russell will explore the various ways we hold on, the nature of letting go, and some ways to release the mind from accumulated attachments. His recent work in this area has focused on opening to the wisdom of our essential self, which can become our own inner teacher in letting go. Integrating ideas from Eastern and Western understandings of the mind, Peter will focus on: · Learning how to let go · Relaxing the mind · Experiencing the present moment · Distinguishing the inner voice from that of the ego · Accessing the wisdom of your essential self
