New Summit Academy, Costa Rica

 

 

As part of my graduate work in the psychology department at UWG, I was encouraged to spend a summer interning at a therapeutic boarding school in Costa Rica, New Summit Academy.  It was my privilege to work with a former graduate of our program, Danny Recio, who is the lead therapist at NSA. Wow, what an amazing experience!  I was fortunate enough to be allowed to use music in my work with the guys at the school.  I found it to be an extremely valuable therapeutic tool in that it built rapport and lifted the self-esteem of the students. As was often the case, something that one of the guys had written and recorded would be the impetus for hours of process work. After such a session, I clearly remember one of the students stating, “I just told you everything about my life in a four minute song. What a trip…” The students taught me so much.  Those were four of the most amazing months of my life.
