June 13, 2006        (Tuesday)         Zermatt, Switzerland

*   Breakfast included at our hotel

*   If the weather is clear, we will enjoy a optional morning excursion up to the Klein Matterhorn.  Here we will reach an altitude of 12,533 feet by way of four successive cable cars.  The time for the entire trip up is 50 minutes.

          On the first leg you will ride above a steep corridor of rubble to reach Furi where you have view straight ahead of the town of Zermatt.

          On the second leg you ride above rocky debris and then above grassy slopes where sheep graze, to view the Matterhorn and glaciers.

           The third leg rides through mineral-like landscape before ending where you have a magnificent view of the Theodule Glacier with its irregular-shaped pinnacles of ice in a cirque of reddish slopes streaked with cascades and topped by snowy peaks.

           The fourth cable car climbs over the glacier and stops at the highest altitude station in Europe (12,533 ft.), perched on a small shelf on the side of Klein Matterhorn.  From this station, after going through a long tunnel, you come out over the snowfields, a paradise for summer skiers.

*   For those persons who do not wish to do the Klein Matterhorn, you also have an option of traveling the Gonergrat railroad.  This tour by rack-railway - the highest open-air railway in Europe - brings you to a wonderful view of the Matterhorn and provides an unforgettable first sight of Mount Rosa (15203 ft) and its glaciers.

*   Return to Zermatt by lunchtime.

*   Lunch on your own.  You may find a typical little alpine café or bakery to try some delicious local dishes or sandwiches.  The pastries are heavenly!!

*   Optional afternoon gondola ride up the mountain on one side of Zermatt and then a beautiful hike down back into town.  The scenery is breathtaking on this hike.  You get such pastoral views of the Matterhorn, just like posters you have seen.

*   Before leaving Switzerland, you must experience a typical Swiss fondue dinner which is included at our hotel this evening.

*   Evening free to enjoy our fairytale town of Zermatt.

June 15, 2006   (Thursday)      Verona, Italy to Venice, Italy

*   Breakfast included at our hotel.

*   Morning tour of the beautiful medieval city of Verona, the setting for Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet.  We will visit:

          A.   The Arena - The best preserved Roman amphitheater in the world.  It was the third largest in the Roman world, and could accommodate 25,000 spectators who would watch .  Today it is the venue for a prestigious opera season.

          B.   Juliet’s House - This tiny little house with its famous balcony is charming in its own way.  While no documentation has been discovered to prove the truth of the legend that it was Juliet’s home, no documentation has disproved it either.  Therefore, what fun it is to stand on the small balcony and dream of Romeo standing below.

          C.   Square of the Herbs - The bustling marketplace where herbs and vegetables from one of Italy’s wealthiest agricultural regions are sold.

*   Travel on to Venice where we will board our ship, The Golden Princess,  by 12:00 noon.

*   Lunch on our ship.

*   Afternoon tour of Venice where all cars are banned - every form of transportation floats, from water taxis and bus ferries to ambulance speedboats and garbage scows.

*   Private boat trip by way of water taxis down the Grand Canal to St. Mark’s Square.  The Grand Canal is in the shape of an inverted “S” and is “main street” through Venice.  As you travel down this canal you will get a real feeling for the city.  It is like traveling through a living museum.  It is fascinating beyond measure.

*   After arriving at St. Mark’s Square:

 You will visit:

          A.   St. Mark’s Cathedral - This cathedral, built in the 11th century, is decorated with booty from returning sea captains - a kind of architectural Venetian trophy chest.  The interior glows mysteriously with gold mosaics and colored marble.  Since about A.D. 830, St. Mark’s bones have been housed on the site.  (No shorts, short skirts, or bare shoulders allowed in the church.  Men must have on pants below their knees)

          B.   St. Mark’s Square - This is the “Heart of Venice” where all around the square are covered galleries of cafes and shops.  There always seems to be instrumentalists playing somewhere on the square.  A lovely cup of coffee is quite fitting while sitting at one of the sidewalk cafes and listening to the music.  Our guide will give us an orientation to the sites around the square before you have some free time to explore.

          C.   Optional gondola boat rides - No trip to Venice is complete until you have ridden in a gondola.  It is one of the most charming and fun ways to see the back canals of this glorious city.  If you wish to ride in a gondola, Leland will help you find a ride.  They are usually around 30 to 40 minutes in length.

*   Return to ship for dinner tonight.

*   Optional return to the city for walking around on your own.  Venice is beautiful at night as you stroll along the lighted canals and across the little bridges.

June 16, 2006     (Friday)        Venice and Embarkation on Our Cruise

                                             { Ship Sails at 1:00 p.m.}

*   Breakfast on our ship

*   Morning tour by private boat out to the islands of Murano and Burano, located in the Venetian Lagoon.  Yesterday you saw the inside of this beautiful city and today you will see it from the outside.  It is a very, very special place!

       Murano - This is Venice’s glass-making island.  By the end of the 13th century, the threat of devastating fire was constant in Venice because of its wooden buildings.  Therefore, the Grand Council decided to move the glassworks away from the city to Murano.  So, here today the famous Venetian glass is still being produced.

       Burano - This is Venice’s lace-making island and the most colorful of the islands in the lagoon.  At the doors and windows of the brightly painted houses the women are engaged in lace-making.

*   Lunch on our ship.

*   1:00 p.m.  Ship sails.

*   Afternoon free to enjoy our beautiful ship.

*   Dinner and entertainment on our ship this evening.

June 17, 2006         (Saturday)      Dubrovnik, Croatia

                                  {Port in at 8:00 a.m.  Sail at 6:00 p.m.}

Dubrovnik has been called the “Jewel of the Eastern Adriatic” and that is no understatement.  “Only a handful of the world’s cities can claim to represent an ideal larger than themselves and Dubrovnik is one of them.”  The thick fortress walls, some of the most complete fortifications in the world, define the Old Town as they have done since they were first raised in the 10th century.  They are approximately 1.25 miles in length.

*   Breakfast on our ship.

*   Motorcoach transfer to take us from the pier to a panoramic point where we can take beautiful pictures of the Old Town of Dubrovnik and its surroundings.

*   Attend a folklore performance where we will be entertained by a Lindjo Folklore Group performing local dances and dressed in national costumes.

 *   Motorcoach takes us to Pile Gate where we will begin our walking tour through the walled city.  Our guide will lead us down the broad, stone-paved main street, the Stradun, pointing out various sights along the way.  The fascinating history of Dubrovnik will be covered as we walk through the city and visit the important venues.  On this walking tour we will visit:

          A.   Franciscan Monastery - In the Middle Ages, when Dubrovnik wrestled with overpopulation, many young people were encouraged to become monks and nuns, and monasteries flourished.  This is a beautiful monastery and ranks as one of the most inspiring sites of Dubrovnik.

          B.   Medieval Pharmacy - Adjacent to the monastery is this fascinating pharmacy.  Part of the Franciscans’ mission was to contribute to the good health of the citizens, so they opened this pharmacy in 1317, and has had a pharmacy in continual operation ever since.  On display are jars, pots, and other medieval pharmacists’ tools.

          C.   Dominican Monastery - Here you will find many of Dubrovnik’s art treasures-altarpieces and manuscripts gathered around a peaceful cloister.

          D.   Cathedral and Treasury - Visit Dubrovnik’s magnificent Cathedral, with its ornate architectural detail, and see the interesting treasure containing an opulent collection of gold and silver items.

          E.   Rector’s Palace - In the Middle Ages, the Republic of Dubrovnik was ruled by a rector, elected by the nobility.  To prevent any one person from getting too popular (and becoming a dictator), the rector’s term was limited to one month.  Most  rectors were in their 50's-near the end of the average lifespan, and less likely to shake things up.  During his term, a rector lived upstairs in this palace.  Because the rector was expected to focus all of his attention on matters of state, he wasn’t allowed to see his family, or even leave the palace.

*    Motorcoach returns us to the ship for lunch or you may remain in town and have lunch on your own.  If you go back to the ship, you may return to the city on your own by way of local water taxis which are quite reasonably priced and well-experienced in transporting cruise passengers.

*   After lunch you may choose to enjoy the single best activity of strolling the scenic mile around the city walls.  From the top of the walls you can really see Dubrovnik to its fullest as if a museum is actually unfolding before your eyes.  If you choose not to walk the walls, there is always the joy of shopping on the Old World street of the Placa.

*   Back on board by 5:00 p.m.  Those of us in town will have to take water taxis back to the ship.

*   6:00 p.m.  Ship sails

*   Dinner and entertainment on our ship this evening.

With its beguiling landscape of wildflowers and cypress trees rising out of shimmering olive groves, Corfu is considered by many as Greece’s most beautiful island.  It also has Greece’s highest rainfall which allows for major vegetable gardens and produces scores of herbs.

*   Breakfast on our ship.

*   Morning tour up to dazzingly picturesque Paleokastritsa, where a near-circular turquoise bay with a crescent of beach is overlooked by pine-covered slopes and white limestone cliffs.  It is probably the most beautiful place on the island.

*   We will have a short visit to the Monastery with Byzantine icons.

*   Next stop will be the Byzantine castle of Angelokastro, built by the Byzantine Emperor Angelos Komninos on a strategic spot overlooking the sea, thus the Byzantines could have excellent control of the south Adriatic Sea.  From this point we shall have splendid views of the coast.  We will have a 15 minute hike up to the castle, but it is well worth the effort!

*   Travel on to the little village of Lakones up on the hill overlooking the bay of Paleokastritsa.  We will stop to admire the beautiful view and take pictures.

*   Lunch included today at the spectacular Bella Vista Restaurant in Lakones.  It is perched right on the cliff’s edge, therefore affording marvelous views.

*   Continue back to the Old Town for a short overview tour.

*   A optional short stop for a coffee or cold drink (not included) at one of the coffee shops at Spianada square under the shade of the trees and with a view to the Palace of St. Michael.

                               {Port in at 7:00 a.m.   Depart at 5:00 p.m.}

Olympia is one of the largest and most beautiful sites in Greece, and the setting is as perfect as could be imagined: a luxuriant valley of wild olive trees spread beside the twin rivers of Alpheios and Kladeos, and overlooked by the pine-covered Hill of Kronos.  Today we shall walk where the ancient Olympians actually performed!

*   Archaeological Museum - This museum is a short walk from the Olympia site.  It displays treasures unearthed in over a century of excavation.  You will see parts of the pediment from the Temple of Zeus, including scenes commemorating Pelops’ chariot race; Hermes of Praxiteles; the Winged Victory (Nike) of Paionios, which was the figure inscribed on all the 2004 Olympic medals; and the helmet inscribed Miltiades, the name of the commander whose forces defeated the Persians at Marathon.

*   Visit to the Mercouri Estate where we will have a short tour of the vineyards and olive farm.  There is also a small museum that owners have made with a collection of old tools used for making the wine and olive oil.  We will walk through the vineyards where there are really nice views to the Ionian Sea and the island of Zakynthos, followed by a wine tasting (2 kinds of wines) and snacks served.  You will have an opportunity to buy wine and olive oil at their shop.  These make fun gifts to take home.

*   Back on board our ship by 4:00 p.m.  Ship sails at 5:00 p.m.

*   A brief photo stop will be made at the Old Olympic Stadium which was built to host the first modern Olympic Games in 1896.  It was used in the 2004 Olympic games for the finish of the Marathon, as well as Archery.

Ephesus is one of the best preserved ancient cities in the Mediterranean and a major player in the birth and evolution of Christianity.  It is as good an introduction as one can get to ancient Roman civilization.  This place is where Antony and Cleopatra once rode in procession, St. Paul preached to the Ephesians, and St. John composed the fourth Gospel.

June 24, 2006       (Saturday)            Santorini, Greece

                             {Port in at 7:00 a.m.    Depart at 6:00 p.m.}

Santorini is regarded by many as the most spectacular of all the Greek Islands.  We  have to agree!  The caldera, epicenter of what was probably the biggest volcanic eruption in recorded history (between 1647 and 1628 B.C.), is truly awesome!  Views from the edge of the caldera of the layered multi-colored cliffs are breathtaking!

*   Breakfast on the ship.

*   Today is “your day” to enjoy Santorini as you will.  You have never seen such spectacular sights as you will see today.  Your schedule for the suggested activities below will be up to you.  We will be there to help you with any questions you may have and give you directions for enjoying the day to its fullest.

*   We anchor in the caldera and take tenders to the bottom of the cliffs that lead up to the glorious town of Thira situated on the edges of the cliffs.  To get up to the top where the town is located you may either take a cable car or ride donkeys.  There are no roads that lead up the cliffs at this point.  You are welcome to choose which way you shall go.  They are both fun!  (One round trip included in cost)

*   Explore Thira on your own.  You will spend most of the day making photos because it is so magnificent!  Be sure you take some time to enjoy a snack or coffee at a café overlooking the caldera.

*   Lunch - You may return to the ship for lunch or enjoy lunch on your own in Thira.

*   In the afternoon, it is much fun to take a local bus or taxi ride to the little town of Oia.  Known locally as Ia, it is built on a steep slope of the caldera with many of its dwellings nestled in niches hewn into the volcanic rock.  It is famous for its sunsets and narrow passageways.  (Bus ride is 1 - 3 euros) Leland will help you find the bus to get to Oia.  It is a short distance from Thira.

*   If you are into excavations and archaeology, you may opt to choose an excursion off the ship that takes you to Akrotiri.  Ancient Akrotiri was a Minoan outpost and excavations begun in 1967 have uncovered an ancient city beneath the volcanic ash.  Buildings, some 3 stories high, date to the late 16th century B.C.  The absence of skeletons and treasures indicates that inhabitants were forewarned of the eruption and escaped.  This is an interesting excursion, but if you have never been to Santorini, we think you will enjoy having the day in Thira and Oia much better.  The excursion to Akrotiri uses up a great deal of your day.

*   Return to the ship by 5:00 p.m.

*   Ship sails at 6:00 p.m.

*   Dinner and entertainment this evening on our ship.

June 25, 2006              (Sunday)                 At Sea

*   Today is your chance to enjoy the ship to its fullest.  You may wish to reorganize your luggage and repack a little today to get a “head start” for disembarkation, day after tomorrow.   Be sure and keep any valuable items out of your checked luggage.  They need to go with you in your carry-on.
