While I have taught primarily on the elementary level of education, I have also taught on the secondary and post-secondary levels of education since 1982. As a consequence, I have evolved as an educator. I find myself in the middle of the road; I am holding on to the skills of the tradionalist while reaching for the conceptual developmental tasks of the constructivist. Moreover, I am convinced that "children care what we know only when they know we care" (Arrendondo, 1989). This evolution drives my class preparation and this conviction challenges my teaching priorities; I teach people first and content second.

Degrees:
Bachelor of Arts, Elementary Education, Xavier University of Louisiana, December 1991

Doctor of Philosophy, Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in Educational Psychology, University of Illinois at Chicago, May 1998

Professional Interests:
In terms of teaching, I greatly enjoy working with aspiring educators. I like to think that our work together makes us all the better at what we do in the classroom. In terms of research, I am interested in seeing the classroom and the school environment from the point of view of children who have experienced traumatic experiences. My hope is that this type of investigation will enable educators to identify traumatically-exposed students and to better meet their educational needs.
