Works on Reserve (with brief annotations)

Blotner, Joseph.  Robert Penn Warren:  A Biography.

Fine source for locating Warren and his activities at any stage of his career.  Somewhat wanting on Warren's accomplishments as a writer.
Burt, John.  Robert Penn Warren and American Idealism  (on order, may be gotten through interlibrary loan)

Complex thematic study of Warren in relation to the tradition named in the title.
Clark, William Bedford.  The American Vision of Robert Penn Warren.  PS3545.A748Z653;  Selected Letters of Robert Penn Warren, Vol.
    I.PS3545.A748 Z48, and Critical Essays on Robert Penn Warren PS3545 .A748 Z66
The first is an excellent thematic study of Warren's work in several genres.  Draw out much of the debate over the meaning of American history, particularly the argument against the grain of Emersonian Transcendentalism.  The Letters are skillfully editied and provide a rich look at the emerging poet.  The Collection of essays is useful, as all such collections are, for providing essay access to shorter and concentrated criticism (i.e. articles).
Casper, Leonard.  Robert Penn Warren:  The Dark and Bloody Ground.  PS3545 .A748 Z65 and Blood Marriage of Earth and Sky: Robert Penn
    Warren's Later Novels PS3545 .A748 Z6.
Two solid studies of Warren's novels.  The first broke ground in 1960.  As the title suggests one of the focuses is on violence in Warren's work.  The second surprised Warren scholars when it was published nearly forty years after the first.
Cullick, Jonathan.  Making History:  The Biographical Narratives of Robert Penn Warren PS3545.A748 Z66
A recent work and the only book devoted entirely to Warren's nonfiction.
Ferriss, Lucy.  Sleeping with the Boss:  Female Subjectivity and Narrative Pattern in Robert Penn Warren  PS3545 .A748Z67.
First major study of Women in Warren's fiction.  Good source for novels.
Guttenberg, Barnett.  Web of Being:  The Novels of Robert Penn Warren PS3545 A748 Z68.
Important study of the theme of interconnection in Warren's novels, a theme important in all of his work.
Hendricks, Randy.  Lonelier than God:  Robert Penn Warren and the Southern Exile PS3545 .A748 Z68
Most colorful title in the group, with the possible exception of Ferriss's Sleeping with the Boss.  Looks at the development of the exile figure in Warren's work in relation to a poetic trope and narrative patterns.  All genres.  Extensive readings of Segregation and A Place to Come To.
Justus, James.  The Achievement of Robert Penn Warren PS3545 .A748 Z73.
Published in 1980, this work changed the shape of Warren criticism.  It remains the most comprehensive study and the standard.  Consult Justus on everything.
Koppelman, Robert.  Robert Penn Warren's Modernist Spirituality. PS3545 .A748Z75

Engaging and helpful look at Warren in relation to Christianity, spirituality, and modernism.

Runyon, Randolph P.  The Taciturn Text PS3545A748Z8644 and The Braided Dream PS3545.A748Z864

The first exams the problem of interpretation faced by the protagonists in Warren's novels.  The second uncovers the verbal as well as thematic links that reveal the interconnectivity and careful place of poems in Warren's later volumes.  Both good sources.

Ruppersburg, Hugh.  Robert Penn Warren and the American Imagination.  PS3545 .A748 Z865 1990

A good source on Warren's work in relation to American history and on Warren as historian.  All genres.  Good source for nonfiction.
Strandberg, Victor.  A Colder Fire:  The Poetry of Robert Penn Warren (1965) PS3545.A748 Z87 and The Poetic Vision of Robert Penn Warren
    (1977) PS3545 .A748 Z88.
Two major studies of Warren's poetry and one of the most influential readers of that body of work.
