(Exam 2 dropbox, under Assignments)
Your
document title should be in the following format:
Lastnamefirstininitial2201exam1.doc EX: johnsonj2201exam1.doc.
DO NOT submit your
essays in separate files, put them all in one document, with the essays
numbered, and submit only one file to me. If you submit more than one
file, I will only grade one.
THE EXAM: (covers chapters 4, 5, 6,
7, 8, 9, 10, and the first part of 11: Migration period)
1. Essay 1 (required
for everyone) : Identify the monument in image 1 and discuss it fully.
write a
fully-developed essay, in which you consider the significance of this
building within its specific culture and specific time, as well as the
many purposes for which it was built and the expression it gave to a
particular cultural moment. Additionally write about the methods,
means, and materials of construction and what they signify about those
who built it. Draw information from the video PPTs, the text, and
the video we watched last class. Use ONLY these sources. Do not
conduct further research outside these sources, on the web or otherwise.
Be very specific in your discussion. DO NOT USE QUOTATION -- put things
into your own words, demonstrating your understanding of the material
and concepts.
2.
Essays 2 and 3 (required) -- choose the pairs for
your essays: Select 2 pairs of works, 1 pair from
Group A and 1 pair from Group B. A pair is one to the right with one
to the left of the same number. Choose carefully, so that you can do your
best work writing these. Pay attention to the corrections and
suggestion that were made to what you submitted for Exam 1, as well as to
the Guide that I posted for Exam 1 answers. Structure your
responses based on those ideas. There are such a great many choices
here that
there is no excuse for writing a shoddy essay. Number your choices: A2, B12, etc. For each
of those pairs, fully identify the works, using the following scheme: (can
cut and paste the ID form into your document)
# from grid

For each of the pairs you
selected above, write a fully-developed essay in which you compare
and contrast these works. For each
pair, write a
UNIFIED essay,
using complete sentences, in which
you discuss the works in relationship to one another. What is the point of
the comparison? what are the cultural contexts for each? How do they
relate to the cultural and./or historical contexts of their creations? Is their subject matter similar, or is there some other
issue by which the two might be linked? Evaluate similarities and
differences between each two. Consider purposes of each and its
significance within the stylistic/historical period in which it was
created. Also consider: media/material, size, style, artist, location,
etc., as appropriate, with particular attention to the ways in which these
features differ between these two works. Stay focused on these as
ART or ARCHITECTURE.
Do not make lists, tick
points, or write separate essays on each.
Do not write a skimpy or minimal answer. Avoid
hype and superlatives.
Discuss as fully as possible, using information from
your video PPT files and your text materials, and your own thoughtful observations. Use proper terminology and explain what the
terms mean, as appropriate. Do not use Web materials. (this
will result in a 0 (ZERO) for the exam and in a 0 for the course) Write a fully developed essay of 1-2 pages for each
topic.
3. Essays 4 and 5. (required)
Select 2 more works from images in Grid C
below, follow the directions there.
4. EXTRA CREDIT (Optional, up to 20% extra).

another pair from the choices in Grid A or Grid B (none of the ones used
above). and identify, as above, then write a compare-and-contrast essay, as
above. (up to 20% additional)
Option B. Select 1 or 2 images from Grid C (none of the
ones used for Part 3. For each, identify according to the format
above, then write 3 paragraphs about its art historical significance.
(up to 10% additional for each)
For essays 2, 3, 4, and 5 form your answers from both the text and PPT videos,
and your own careful observation ad thought.
This NOT a research project. DO NOT go surfing the web
for your essay material. If you use any sources, give proper citations.
Do not use quotation. Do not take data from
text or PPT videos verbatim-- paraphrase -- use your own words and
synthesize the information, and add your own reflections to these sources
from looking at the works and considering the issues. Do not limit
yourself to the short segments on the specific works, but consider also
the information and opinion given on the eras and their concerns, as well
as other examples of similar monuments, as long as you are careful to
distinguish the one here from the others in relevant ways. And
review my comments, corrections, and suggestions on Exam 1 that was
returned to you as you prepare your submission for this one.
