Art 4202W – Article review

As part of the Writing Across the Curriculum requirement for this class, you are to write three article reviews or responses to your choice of articles for which I have placed links on the website.

You may write either a review or a response, but either should be done in a scholarly fashion, really contending with the premises of the scholar and their point of view and conclusions.  You may of course disagree with all or part of their position, provided that you do so in a way that demonstrates your respect for and understanding of their ideas.  A sample of the review process may be found in such journals as Speculum¸ a prominent publication of the Medieval Academy of America, which includes a great number of book reviews each issue. (From UWG homepage, go to library page, under research, select e-journals search, and then type in the journal title, and browse some recent issues.)  While this journal is primarily historical, there are also art historical entries, and at any rate, the method of analysis and criticism will be similar.  You might also look at the College Art Association's review site for models.   http://www.caareviews.org/new.html

Of course the reviewers for either of these there are often well-established scholars in their own right, so are more familiar with the subject area than you will probably be.  BUT --- you have to start somewhere, so grapple with it the best that you can.  And you do not need to criticize from a position of expertise; rather you need to demonstrate your comprehension of the article.

Your review/response should be typed, double-spaced and 650-1000 words in length.

These are due on September 10th, October 4th, November 5th.
