NOTE FOR EXAM 1 (Monday, September 13th, 2004)

For the exam, you should concentrate on the chapters on African Art in your two texts.  You should know the titles of works, and both the country of origin (e.g. Nigeria, Sierra Leone, &c.), and the culture (Chokwe, Asante, &c), as well as the date.  You should be able to explain the significance of the work within that cultural group, as well as any distinctive features of their creation (materials, technique, style, &c. as appropriate.

The test will consist of 4 single (1 page) essays, with a choice between the right and left images shown, and 2 longer (2 page) Compare & Contrast essays, in which you will need to discuss the 2 works in relationship to one another.  There will also be 1 extra credit essay --an additional image to ID and discuss.
