You should consider carefully how each of the works fits into its period, cultural, or stylistic category and/or sub-category, making sure that you are being very specific.  How does each work function within the society and its period? Then discuss the works in relationship to one another, fully exploring their significance and their implications as examples of medieval work, as well as any more specific art historical/historical category (Migration, Insular, Norman, Carolingian, Ottonian, Mozarabic, Islamic, etc.).

The images here come from the text or PPT videos, Chapters 9, 10, 11, 12.  Some of the images are details of larger works or alternative views.  Your discussion should include information that is pertinent about the larger work, as well as any other issues about context that are relevant.  Consider their roots and/or influences, their uses/purposes, meanings, and anything else that may be significant in historical/art historical terms, including other works with the same subject, style, purpose, influences, &C.  State the rationale for the comparison.  Write a fully developed essay.  If you refer to images not included here, cite them by PPT or ill. number.Your answers should be drawn from the material in the PPT videos, your text, and your own thoughtful observation ONLY.  This NOT a research project. DO NOT go surfing the web for your essay material. Evidence of the use of the web will earn you a 0 (ZERO) for the exam.

Consider carefully any narrative ideas at play and the sources of the narratives in the two.  Do the works mark an important historical moment?  Are there ways to compare them according to style or technique?    You should prepare to write a well-developed comparison/contrast type essay, thoroughly discussing how they embody noteworthy distinctions between the periods and styles, and discussing their approaches to the creation and use of art. Consider, as usual, the standard question for Compare and Contrast, which appears on any exam: First, identify both works in the pair, in list form, by the style/period/movement, title, artist, and date.   Then, for that pair of slides, write a UNIFIED essay, using complete sentences, in which you discuss the works in relationship to one other.  Evaluate the similarities and the differences between each two. Consider the purpose of each and its significance within the cultural/ stylistic/historical period in which it was created.  Also consider: media, size, location, etc., as appropriate.

Write a really full discussion for each. Prepare in MSWord (only). Type, Double space.  Pay attention to grammar, word choices, clarity, conciseness. (WAC class -- you will be graded on writing)
