| The Final Exam (Fall 2008) due
Wednesday, December 10th, by 5PM. Submit
through the Assignment Dropbox in WebCT Vista Select four pairs from among the choices
of pairs listed below for Compare and Contrast essays. You should consider
carefully how each of the works fits into its period, cultural, or stylistic
category, making sure that you are being very specific. How does
each work function within the society and its period? Are there narrative ideas at play
that are comparable in the two? Do they mark an important historical
moment? Are there ways to compare them according to style or technique?
You should prepare to write a well-developed comparison/contrast type essay,
thoroughly discussing how they embody noteworthy distinctions between the
periods and styles, and discussing their approaches to the creation
and use of art. Especially note ways in which they reflect American
artistic and/or cultural ideas or movements, and the influences at play. Consider, as usual, the standard question for Compare and
Contrast, which appears on any exam: First, identify both
works in the pair, in list form, by the
style/period/movement, title, artist, and date. Then, for that pair of slides, write a
UNIFIED essay, using complete sentences, in which you discuss the works in
relationship to one other. Evaluate the similarities and the differences
between each two. Consider the purpose of each and its significance within
the cultural/ stylistic/historical period in which it was created. Also
consider: media, size, location, etc., as appropriate.
