PREPARATION FOR EXAM 1 (October 4th)

For each of the four museums we have investigated, you should prepare by examining the following:

• a statement of their individual philosophy of collecting and forming a museum; a brief history of their collection: founding and accrual of objects, including methods of obtaining works, where known
• for each museum, 3 DIVERSE works which are evidence of their philosophy and methods

You should accomplish this by exploring their websites and the collections in evidence there, and your class notes, and by thoughtful review of issues and objects.

You may bring to the exam a list which includes the titles, artists, dates for the 3 works for each museum.  You will write the essays in class, with no other notes, so  make sure that you are in command of your material and arguments.   Remember that you will not have any images to stimulate your thinking, so have good mental pictures at your disposal.  You will be expected to treat the questions with some depth, not just in a superficial way.
